Sans rien laisser de leur velours. leaving no trace of their velvet touch.
Je rêve aux baisers qui demeurent I dream of kisses that last
toujours. forever.
Ici-bas tous les hommes pleurent Down here men mourn
Leurs amitiés ou leurs amours. for their friendships and loves,
Je rêve aux couples qui demeurent I dream of couples who last
Pauline Viardot
Poem by Alexander Pushkin
‘Зак л ин ан иe’ Zaklinanie (Incantation) [CD 2 Track 21]
(pub. 1864)
VLADIMIR CHERNOV
ANOTHER FROM the group of songs in Russian that Viardot published, as
a tribute to her dedicated admirers in Russia, as a souvenir for old friends, as
part of the legacy of her friendship with Turgenev. Pushkin went to his death,
in a senseless duel, aged only 38. In one of his ‘Poems in Prose’, Turgenev,
thinking of Viardot perhaps, wrote of a woman ‘wise and good…everything is
alien to you, and you do not need anyone’. She asks for no sympathy, nor does
she offer any, her glance is deep and inscrutable. ‘So, in the Elysian Fields, to
the sublime sound of Gluck’s melodies, without sorrow and without joy, pass
the graceful shades.’
О , есл и прав да, что вноч и, Oh, if it’s true that in the night
O esli pravda, shto v nochi,
Когда покоятся живы е When the living repose
