Rosa mollis SMITH, Engl. Bot., ed.1, 35: t. 2459. (1813). „Soft–leaved Roundfruited
Rose. ICOSANDRIA Polygina. GEN. CHAR. Cal. urn-shaped, fleshy, contracted at
the orifice, terminated in 5 segments. Petals 5. Seeds numerous, bristly, fixed to the inside
of the calyx. SPEC. CHAR. Fruit globose, half as long as the segments of the calyx, bristly
as well as the flowerstalks. Prickles of th estem straight. Leaflets elliptice-ovate, downy
on both sides. Syn. Rosa villosa ß. Sm. Fl. Brit. 538. Relh. 193. R. sylvestris, folio mollitèr
hirsuto, fructo rotundo glabro, calyce et pediculo hispidis. Dill. In Raii Syn. 478. PLANTS
of this Rose, brought by the late Mr. Geo. Jackson from Scotland, have blossomed, under
the care of Mr. Anderson, in the garden of Jas. Vere, Esq.; and they confirm an opinion we
have long entertained, of its being a distinct species from the true R. villosa, t. 538. It is
howewer what was gathered between Edinburgh and Ravelston wood, and appears to be
not very uncommon in England and Wales. The Rev. H. Davies has observed the fruit to
vary in Anglesea, from perfect smoothness to every degree of roughness; which removes
all doubt as to the synonym of Dillenius. The stem is of much humbler growth than that of
the villosa; the leaflets less elongated, and more inclining to ovate; the petals of a deeper
red; the ripe fruit much smaller. One segments of the calyx, and no more, is often very distinctly
pinnated. The leaflets in our t. 538. are not sufficiently elongated, nor so correctly
elliptical as they ought to be.”
A diagnózishoz mellékelt színes festményen is világosan látszik, hogy a szirmok
mirigytelenek. A leírás és a festmény alapján kevés morfológiai bélyegben különbözik csak
a R. villosa-tól, így legfeljebb annak csak alfaja, de semmiképpen se önálló faj.
Elsőként BESSER írt le mirigyes szirmú taxont: Rosa ciliato-petala BESSER, Enum.
Pl.: 66. (1822). „Hanc in Lithuania legi. Eandem quoque foliis angustioribus et longioribus
possideo e horto Cracoviensi nomine R. villosae. Differt a Rosa villosa, stipulis inferioribus
obtusissimus, costa aculeatis more R. caucasicae, foliolis rotundioribus excepta cracoviensi,
calycis pinnulis quidquam magis dilatatis, floribus rubrioribus et petalis breviter ciliatis.
Fructum nondum vidi.” Lectotypus: № 173546 W. BESSER in BP, 18??: „Rosa ciliato-petala
mihi. E dumetis Lithuania”, LECTOTYPUS, designated by I. Buzunova 1996! Sadler J.
gyüjteményében: „Herb. Sadl. 25302”. Kiemeli, és a fajnévben rögzíti is – mint legfontosabb
elkülönítő bélyeget a R. villosatól – a szirmok mirigyes szegélyét („petalis breviter
ciliatis”). A lectotípuson valóban megfigyelhetőek a sziromszéli mirigyek (7. és 8. ábra).
Néhány évvel később FRIES is talál mirigyes szirmú rózsát: Rosa mollissima
FRIES, Novit. fl. Suec. Ed. alt.: 151. (1828). „Fructibus pulposis praecocibus (pedunculisque
subhispidis), petalis denticulatis, aculeis rectiusculis, foliolorum serraturis duplicatis patentibus
glandulosis.”…„Optimam & essentialem notam offerunt petala minute denticulato-ciliata!,
unde R. ciliato-petalam Bess. enum. p. 66., licet non visam, huc referendam credo.” A
szirmok szintén mirigyesen rojtos szegélyűek. FRIES ismeri a már korábban, BESSER által leírt
R. ciliato-petalat, de azt nem látta. A leírás alapján nem különbözik a BESSER-féle taxontól,
így a priorítás elve alapján FRIES taxonja teljes értékű szinonímja a R. ciliato-petala-nak.
