The organisation of the 11 th International Conference on the Ecology and Management
of Alien Plant Invasions (EMAPi 2011) has been started, and Dr. Szaniszló Priszter
has deceased in the same year. He was the most prominent figure in the second half of the
20 th century, dealing with the Hungarian adventive plant research (cf. SZABÓ & CZOMÁNÉ
2004). His publications on adventive floristics, taxonomy, bibliography and research history
constitute an indispensable literature base (e.g. PRISZTER 1957, 1960–1971, 1963, 1978,
1997, KOVÁCS & PRISZTER 1974). In the last decades in Hungary he was the most frequently
quoted author of this field. The authors of the book summarizing the most recent knowledge
of this topic have dedicated the work to him (BoTTA-DUKÁT & BALOGH eds. 2008).
We have already reported several times on the EMAPi Conferences being organized
since 1992 as well as, since 1999, about its bearings concerning Hungary. 1 st : 1992,
Loughborough, UK; 2 nd : 1993, Kostelec, Czech Republic; 3 rd : 1995, Tempe, Arizona, USA;
4 th : 1997, Berlin, Germany; 5 th : 1999 La Maddalena, Italy: BALOGH (2000), UDVARDY,
BALOGH, BOTTA-DUKÁT (2000); 6 th : 2001, Loughborough, UK: BALOGH (2002); 7 th : 2003,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA; 8 th : 2005, Katowice, Poland: BALOGH, BOTTA-DUKÁT,
CSISZÁR, DANCZA (2005). Hungary was represented in 2007, the 9 th Conference, by Zoltán
Botta-Dukát, however, nobody represented our country in 2009, on the 10 th Conference, in
the South African Stellenbosch. After such prerequisites, it was of prominent importance
that Hungary could organize the 11 th EMAPi, as one of the countries most affected by the
plant invasions in Central Europe. The organizing institutes were the Institute of Ecology
and Botany of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Natural Science Faculty of the
Western Hungarian University, as well as the Directorate of the Vas County Museums. The
venue was the Vas County Cultural and Youth Centre. The main organizers of the Conference
were Zoltán Botta-Dukát (MTA ÖBKI) and Lajos Balogh (Savaria Museum) with
the cooperation of the Altagra Business Services.
