The Regulation establishing a European Institute for Gender Equality was adopted in<br />
December 2006. The main objective of the Institute shall be to contribute to the promotion of<br />
gender equality, including gender mainstreaming in all Community policies and the resulting<br />
national policies, by providing technical assistance to the Community institutions, in particular the<br />
Commission and the authorities of the Member States. The Institute is in the process of being set<br />
up. The Management Board was established in 2007 and the Director took up her duties in<br />
April 20<strong>09</strong>.<br />
The European Parliament<br />
The Committee on Women’s rights and gender equality is responsible for:<br />
1. The definition, promotion and protection of women's rights in the Union and related<br />
Community measures:<br />
2. the promotion of women's rights in third countries;<br />
3. equal opportunities policy, including equality between men and women with regard to<br />
labour market opportunities and treatment at work;<br />
4. the removal of all forms of discrimination based on sex;<br />
5. the implementation and further development of gender mainstreaming in all policy sectors;<br />
6. the follow-up and implementation of international agreements and conventions involving the<br />
rights of women and<br />
7. information policy on women.<br />
The European Parliament High Level Group on Gender Equality was constituted in April 2004 and<br />
the most important task of this Group is to ensure that the European Parliament takes into account<br />
the issues of gender mainstreaming and equality between women and men in all the policy areas<br />
which are debated in its committees.<br />
The Council of the EU<br />
Member States' ministers responsible for Gender Equality meet in the Employment, Social Policy,<br />
Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO). As regard the policy area of gender equality, the<br />
Council has in recent years mainly taken decisions concerning indicators relating to the Beijing<br />
Platform for Action.<br />
