2.5.1. EWL activities related to the strategic objectives of the Beijing Platform for Action<br />
Women and the economy / Women and poverty<br />
The EWL followed many issues relating to the broad area of women’s economic independence,<br />
which encompasses employment, reconciliation of private and professional life, the gender pay gap,<br />
women and poverty and social policy. Weaving the gender equality thread throughout these remains<br />
one of the key challenges for the EWL. The 2006 “Who Cares?” campaign of the EWL focused on<br />
the provision of care services for all dependants and was followed in 2008-20<strong>09</strong> by intensive work<br />
on new European measures related to maternity leave and parental leave. The need for the<br />
integration of a strong gender equality perspective in the work on poverty and social exclusion,<br />
including the annual European roundtables and preparation for the European Year against Poverty<br />
in 2010 was a permanent focus of the EWL work.<br />
Education and training of women<br />
Education is one of the gaps that the EWL has been highlighting in European gender equality<br />
legislation. In 2004-20<strong>09</strong>, the EWL produced education material for its members on issues such as<br />
gender budgeting, asylum, violence against women.<br />
Women and health – the EWL actions focused mainly on sexual and reproductive health and rights<br />
– see women’s human rights section.<br />
Violence against women (VAW)<br />
The EWL enlarged its Observatory on Violence against Women (created 1997), now comprising 42<br />
experts from 30 countries and set up a specific branch working on all forms of violence against<br />
women, the Policy Action Centre on VAW (EPAC VAW).<br />
These are permanent monitoring and advocacy structures promoting measures to combat VAW and<br />
protecting women victims at national, and in particular at European level where no common policy<br />
exists. The EWL also undertakes many activities to fight against trafficking in women and sexual<br />
exploitation of women, including a transnational project in 14 countries in 2006 and the<br />
coordination of a large project in the Nordic Baltic Region (2005-2008), aiming at setting standards<br />
and developing assistance for women victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation.<br />
