Isa. 10:28-34 describes how <strong>the</strong> enemy marches <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

<strong>to</strong> Jerusalem, conquer<strong>in</strong>g various villages on <strong>the</strong> way. When <strong>the</strong><br />

enemy gets very close <strong>to</strong> Jerusalem (able <strong>to</strong> shake his hand over Mt.<br />

Zion), God will crush <strong>the</strong> enemy and Jerusalem will be redeemed. In<br />

1974, J. D. Amus<strong>in</strong> suggested identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> events mentioned <strong>in</strong><br />

this pesher on Isaiah 10 as relat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> P<strong>to</strong>lemy Lathyrus' campaign<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st Alexander Jannaeus. 31 Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Josephus (War 1.86 =<br />

Ant. 13.324-56), when Alexander Jannaeus established himself <strong>in</strong><br />

power, he tried <strong>to</strong> conquer Acco-P<strong>to</strong>lemais. After he succeeded <strong>in</strong><br />

overcom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> army of P<strong>to</strong>lemais on <strong>the</strong> battlefield, he laid siege<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. At that po<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>the</strong> people of P<strong>to</strong>lemais called upon P<strong>to</strong>lemy<br />

Lathyrus IX, who was <strong>the</strong>n rul<strong>in</strong>g at Cyprus, <strong>to</strong> help <strong>the</strong>m fight<br />

Alexander Jannaeus. At that time, P<strong>to</strong>lemy was not on good terms<br />

with his mo<strong>the</strong>r, Cleopatra III, <strong>the</strong> queen of Egypt, who <strong>in</strong> turn was<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g his bro<strong>the</strong>r, P<strong>to</strong>lemy Alexander I. Before Lathyrus sailed<br />

<strong>from</strong> Cyprus <strong>to</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> people of Acco withdrew <strong>the</strong>ir request.<br />

Never<strong>the</strong>less, P<strong>to</strong>lemy Lathyrus proceeded, landed <strong>in</strong> Shiqmonah<br />

south of Acco, and started his journey <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> city of Acco.<br />

Alexander Jannaeus, <strong>from</strong> his side, started <strong>to</strong> negotiate with P<strong>to</strong>lemy<br />

Lathyrus; at <strong>the</strong> same time, Jannaeus asked Lathyrus' mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

Cleopatra, <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong> his aid. After P<strong>to</strong>lemy Lathyrus found out<br />

that Jannaeus had sent messengers <strong>to</strong> Cleopatra, he began <strong>to</strong> attack<br />
