A common weakness <strong>of</strong> many presentations is that a month, a<br />

week, or even a day after the presentation, no one remembers what it<br />

was about. Or, if they do remember something about it, they are not<br />

doing anything differently than they were doing before the presentation.<br />

<strong>The</strong>refore, for your presentation to be effective, you must actively<br />

work to make it memorable, actionable, and transferable. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

is a great deal to consider in bringing this strategy to fruition, but it<br />

pays big dividends. Not all presenters will want to use all the techniques<br />

in this chapter. Keynote speakers, for example, typically use a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> the interactive learning techniques described here. But<br />

others, who present full-day or multiday seminars, will find these techniques<br />

invaluable.<br />

Make It Memorable<br />

Research has shown that 24 hours after hearing a presentation,<br />

the listener will forget at least 50 percent <strong>of</strong> all the information presented.<br />

In 24 more hours, another 50 percent will be forgotten. This<br />

means that in a mere 48 hours after hearing a presentation, no matter<br />

how attentive the listener is trying to be, no matter how good his notes<br />

are, he will forget about 75 percent <strong>of</strong> everything the speaker said.<br />

In light <strong>of</strong> these statistics, this section examines the types <strong>of</strong><br />

memory and presents 11 techniques that are guaranteed to enhance the<br />
