<strong>Limerick</strong> 2030 <strong>An</strong> <strong>Economic</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Spatial</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Limerick</strong><br />

Local Area <strong>Plan</strong> (<strong>Limerick</strong> County)<br />

The aim of a Local Area <strong>Plan</strong> (LAP) is to establish a framework <strong>for</strong> the planned, co-ordinated <strong>and</strong><br />

sustainable development of the area <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> the conservation <strong>and</strong> enhancement of its natural <strong>and</strong><br />

built environment over the period of the <strong>Plan</strong>. The following LAPs exist within the functional area of<br />

<strong>Limerick</strong> County Council:<br />

Southern Environs Development <strong>Plan</strong> 2011<br />

Castletroy Local Area <strong>Plan</strong> 2009<br />

Askeaton Local Area <strong>Plan</strong> 2009<br />

Kilmallock Local Area <strong>Plan</strong> 2009<br />

Newcastle West Local Area <strong>Plan</strong> 2008<br />

The LAP’s <strong>for</strong> Castletroy <strong>and</strong> the Southern Environs are designed to integrate these areas into the<br />

Gateway of <strong>Limerick</strong> as designated in the NSS<br />

<strong>Limerick</strong> City Council Development <strong>Plan</strong> 2010-2016<br />

The City Development <strong>Plan</strong> addresses the following areas;<br />

<strong>Economic</strong><br />

Retail<br />

Transportation<br />

Housing<br />

Regeneration<br />

Social & Community<br />

Arts, Culture, Creativity & Tourism<br />

Built Heritage & Archaeology<br />

City Centre Area Profiles<br />

Development Management<br />

There is an additional Core Strategy <strong>for</strong> <strong>Limerick</strong> City that was adopted in April 2012. Core strategies<br />

are a requirement under Section 10 of the <strong>Plan</strong>ning <strong>and</strong> Development Act 2000 (as amended). 4<br />

The strategy is designed to control the availability of l<strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> residential development so as to avoid<br />

a saturation of the market or development of property in a non-sequential manner.<br />
