All the influenza vaccines currently available in Australia are either split virion or subunit vaccines prepared from purified inactivated influenza virus that has been cultivated in embryonated hens’ eggs. Split virion and subunit vaccines are generally considered to be equivalent with respect to safety, and both are substantially free of the systemic reactions sometimes induced by whole virus vaccines. One exception is Fluvax (CSL Limited), which in 2010 resulted in higher rates of adverse events, specifically fevers and febrile convulsions, in children aged
