When Excel inserts a trendline, it may look like a new data series, but it’s not. It’s a new chart element<br />

with a name, such as Series 1 Trendline 1. And, of course, a trendline does not have a corresponding<br />

SERIES formula.<br />

Linear trendlines<br />

Figure 17-23 shows two charts. The first chart depicts a data series without a trendline. As you<br />

can see, the data seems to be “linear” over time. The next chart is the same chart but with a linear<br />

trendline that shows the trend in the data.<br />

The workbook used in this example is available on the companion CD-ROM. The file is<br />

named linear trendline.xlsx.<br />

The second chart also uses the options to display the equation and the R-squared value. In this<br />

example, the equation is as follows:<br />

y = 53.19x + 514.9
