Loose (0-20): A group of ancient earthworks, fortified<br />

by the Regnenses tribe during Vortimer’s rebellion. They<br />

abandoned it when the Saxons overwhelmed Quarry<br />

Wood (q.v.).<br />

Lyminge (5. Liminge) (P-20): The capital of the<br />

Liminwara theod, it became the property of the Bishop of<br />

London after Badon. There is a Benedictine priory on the<br />

outskirts of town.<br />

Lyminster (N-20): The Knuckler Hole, a deep pool<br />

just northwest of the village, houses a dragon who sallies<br />

forth to steal men, cattle, or sheep, but whose only<br />

food is maidens. Bretwalda Aelle of Sussex promised the<br />

hand of his daughter to the thegn who killed the beast.<br />

Lympne (R. Lemanis) (P-20): A Saxon Shore fort,<br />

until the Saxons captured it and built a burh inside the<br />

Roman walls. A post-Badon motte and bailey stands<br />

nearby, upgraded to small castle status when the French<br />

raid these coasts after Arthur’s Roman War.<br />

Magouns (M. Arundel) (N-20): A large castle built<br />

and then upgraded quickly after Badon, held directly by<br />

Arthur until Phase 4, when he cedes it to the Earl of<br />

Arundel. Its ghosts include the original castellan, a potboy,<br />

and a young girl who committed suicide after a<br />

failed love affair. A white bird flutters against the windows<br />

when a member of the family is about to die.<br />

Maldon (P-18): A small village marks the site of a battle<br />

between Saxons and Angles, remembered for the<br />

foolhardy courtesy of the Saxon leader Berthnoth, who<br />

allowed the Angles to cross to the mainland from the<br />

small island on which they had been trapped.<br />

Malling (S. Mealling) (0-20): Before Badon this was<br />

Bretwalda Aelle’s capital. There is still a sizeable Saxon<br />

population here, who fish the Ouse for eels. The town is<br />

owned by the Archbishop of Carlion, who was granted it<br />

soon after Badon.<br />

Michelham Priory (0-20): The priory is haunted by a<br />

gray lady who visits a certain bedroom, looking down at<br />

the sleeping occupants for a few minutes before departing<br />

through the closed door.<br />

Milton (5. Melentun) (0-19): The center of the<br />

Wincelingas theod. this town has had a mill since Roman<br />

times. After Badon the town was given to Sir Berac, who<br />

granted it to the Bishop of Lincoln on his deathbed. The<br />

town is currently ruled by Sir Evrard, a younger brother<br />

of the Bishop.<br />

Money Hills (L-20): A group of round barrows. The<br />

local Britons say it holds vast treasure.<br />

Mt. Caburn (0-20): Said to be a clod from the Devil’s<br />

Dyke (q.v.), this hill is crowned by a hillfort. It was long<br />

abandoned by the British but recently taken over by Gill,<br />

a hammer-throwing giant. Within the hill, locals say, lies<br />

the body of a knight buried in gold armor and a silver<br />

coffin.<br />

Old Winchester Hill (M-20): An ancient hillfort<br />

crowns this hill, with a view all the way to the Isle of<br />

Might. It was to be the site of Winchester, but the construction<br />

materials were mysteriously transported ten<br />

miles to the current site of Camelot (q.v.).<br />

Oldbury (0-19): An ancient hillfort, resettled briefly by<br />

rebels from the Cantiacii tribe when Vortigern granted<br />

Thanet to Hengist, and reinforced during Vortimer’s<br />

rebellion. Later, the Saxons destroyed it after a two<br />

month siege.<br />

Pevensey (R. Anderida) (0-20): A Saxon Shore fort.<br />

Aelle pledged the town to Wotan, burnt its buildings,<br />

razed its walls, and slaughtered every man, woman and<br />

child within. Abandoned until after Badon, Arthur’s<br />

knights build a hasty motte and bailey inside the ruins,<br />

later upgrading its walls with Anderida’s rubble. Ghostly<br />

Saxons reenact the storming of Anderida every year on<br />

its anniversary. (Necromancy 3d20 on the night of Aug.<br />
