Illness and accidents
IF YOUR CHILD HAS A PULSE
BUT IS NOT BREATHING
1 Start mouth-to-mouth
ventilation (see below).
2 Continue for one minute, then
carry your child to a phone and
dial 999 for an ambulance, or
get someone else to call for you.
3 Continue mouth-to-mouth
ventilation. Check for signs of
circulation every minute.
MOUTH-TO-MOUTH VENTILATION
IF YOUR BABY OR CHILD HAS
NO SIGNS OF CIRCULATION
AFTER 10 SECONDS AND IS NOT
BREATHING
Start chest compression (see page
114) together with mouth-to-mouth
ventilation (see below).
IF YOUR CHILD HAS A PULSE
AND IS BREATHING
1 Place your child in the
recovery position (see page 114).
2 Dial 999 for an ambulance.
3 Check breathing and signs of
circulation frequently.
Babies (under one year)
1 Place the baby on any firm surface.
2 Look in the mouth and carefully
remove any obvious obstruction.
3 Put one hand on the forehead and
two fingers of the other hand under
the chin as shown.
4 Gently tilt the head backwards.
5 Seal your lips around your baby’s
mouth and nose.
6 Blow gently over 1–1.5 seconds,
looking at the chest to see if it rises.
7 As the chest rises, stop blowing and
allow the chest to fall.
8 Do this at a rate of 20 breaths per
minute.
9 Check for signs of circulation after
20 breaths. If present, continue
mouth to mouth ventilation.
10 If breathing starts, place your baby
on his or her side in your arms or
lap with the head held low.
Children (over one year)
1 Place the child on any firm
surface.
2 Look in the mouth and carefully
remove any obvious obstruction.
3 Put one hand on the forehead
and two fingers of the other hand
under the chin as shown.
4 Gently tilt the head backwards.
5 Seal your lips around your child’s
mouth while pinching the nose.
6 Blow gently over 1–1.5 seconds,
looking at the chest to see if it
rises. Take shallow breaths and do
not empty your lungs completely.
7 As the chest rises, stop blowing
and allow the chest to fall.
8 Do this at a rate of 20 breaths
per minute.
9 Check for signs of circulation
after 20 breaths. If still present
continue mouth-to-mouth
ventilation. If absent, commence
chest compression.
10 If breathing starts, place your
child in the recovery position.
