The first weeks
Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions. Loosely fill the scoop
with milk powder and level it off
without compacting it. Only use one
scoop of powder to 30 ml or 1 oz
water.
Never leave your baby alone
with a bottle as a way of
getting him or her off to
sleep. There’s a danger
of choking.
BOTTLE FEEDING
OUTSIDE THE HOME
Add the milk powder to the water.
Making up a feed with too much
powder can make your baby ill.
Holding the edge of the teat, put it
on the bottle. Screw the retaining
ring into the bottle. Cover the teat
with a bottle cap. Shake the bottle
until the powder is dissolved.
FEEDING YOUR BABY
Before feeding your baby, cool the
bottle of milk by holding the bottle
under cold running water with a
cap covering the teat. Always
check the temperature of the
milk by dropping a little onto the
inside of your wrist. It should feel
just warm to touch (not hot).
When feeding your baby, keep
the teat full of milk, otherwise your
baby will take in air. If the teat
flattens while you are feeding, pull
gently on the bottle to release the
vacuum. If the teat blocks, start
again with another sterile teat.
If you are going out for the
day:
• use ready-to-feed liquid
formula. This is the
safest feed for a young
baby; or
•
if there will be
somewhere safe to make
up the feed, take the
boiled water in a clean
flask. You will also need
a measured amount of
formula powder in a
small sterilised container
and an empty sterilised
feeding bottle and teat.
Make up the feed just
before feeding; or
• if your only option is to
take a prepared formula
feed with you, make it
up just before you leave
home and cool it
quickly by holding the
capped bottle under cold
running water. Store it
in the fridge and take it
with you in a cool bag
with an ice block. Use
the feed within four
hours.
Always use the scoop which has
come with the milk. Do not use old
scoops or swap scoops from one type
of milk to another.
