EMERGENCY HELP
If your child is ill or has an accident and you need
help quickly:
• Phone your GP. You can call at any time of the
day or night. If you haven’t been given a special
number for calls outside surgery hours, phone the
usual number and wait for an answer.
• If your GP doesn’t answer or can’t get there
quickly enough, take your child to the
accident and emergency department of the
nearest hospital with a children’s unit. Find
out in advance where this is. Your health visitor
will be able to help you.
• If you think your child’s life is in danger, call
an ambulance. Dial 999 and ask for the
ambulance service. Say it’s for a baby or a child.
You don’t need a coin or phonecard to dial 999
from a public phone box.
If you don’t have a phone:
• Keep a couple of coins and/or a phonecard always
ready in a special place.
•
Find out in advance whether neighbours have a
phone you could use in an emergency.
