Coal
After a period in which the use of coal actually declined, world demand is expected to double
during the remainder of this century. Its main use is likely to be for an increasing part in the
production of electricity, for the production of industrial heat and for the production of liquid
fuels. The greatest constraints on coal use will continue to arise from environmental limitations.

All the suppliers quoted in Table 3 are able to increase their output. That of the United States
is expected to show a substantial increase as is that of China. Grouped under ‘Other’ in Table 3
and also expected to show increases are India, Brazil, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, Yugoslavia
and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. Production for export markets wil also increase in
Australia, South Africa and Colombia.
