with other organizations since 197 1. The 197 1 NSE was organized by NCERT in collaboration
with the University Grants Commission (UGC). Since 1972, the Jawahar La1 Nehru Memorial
Fund (JNMF) has been collaborating with NCERT in its efforts to popularize science through
exhibitions. They have been jointly sponsoring state-level Science Exhibitions since 1978. Since
1974, the organization of the science exhibitions has been based on thematic considerations,
eight to twelve in number. The theme and subthemes are sent for guiding the states for the
organization of their exhibitions. One of the subthemes had been ‘Energy and Power’ in 1974,
‘Energy and Fuels’, 1975 to 1979 and ‘Energy Generation and Needs’ in 1980. The areas covered
by the exhibits mostly pertain to the use of solar energy, wind power, nuclear power generation,
fuel from wastes (gobar gas, nutty gas), economy in use of energy, etc. The following table gives
an idea about the types of models displayed in various exhibitions.
