How to construct a solar cooker
PHYSICS WORKGROUP OF THE SCIENCE EDUCATION CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF THE
PHILIPPINES~
This activity, which was designed for grade 9 or 10, is estimated to take ten hours to perform.
It is best done after the students have studied temperature, reflection at a plane mirror, the
modes of heat transfer, heat capacity and conductivity.
CONCEPTS AND SKILLS TAUGHT
1. Paper is a good insulator. Crumpled up, it prevents convection of air inside a box.
2. Tripled layer plastic can insulate the cooking area of a box. Low energy radiation cannot
pass through plastic.
3. Aluminium foil or mirror reflects energy to the cooking area of the box. The aluminium
foil also insulates the cooking area.
4. Warm air tends to rise above sinking cold air.
5. Constructing a solar cooker.
OBJECTIVES
1. To construct a solar cooker and describe its important parts.
2. To compare the temperature inside and outside the solar cooker.
3. To illustrate the modes of energy transfer using the solar cooker.
4. To cook eggs using the solar cooker.
5. To state the factors affecting the use of a solar cooker.
