a 'part' and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is a 'whole'. It seemed strange: it is one thing<br />
<strong>to</strong> say that <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ne that is carved from <strong>the</strong> rock becomes separated<br />
by an axe made for that purpose, but can you say that about <strong>the</strong><br />
Crea<strong>to</strong>r’s essence? In addition, with what were <strong>the</strong> souls divided<br />
from His essence and excluded from <strong>the</strong> Crea<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> become creatures?<br />
From <strong>the</strong> above we clearly understand that, just as an axe cuts and<br />
divides a physical object in two, so <strong>the</strong> spiritual change <strong>of</strong> form divides<br />
it in two.<br />
If a certain property <strong>of</strong> mine begins <strong>to</strong> change with regard <strong>to</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
property, this transformed attribute instantly (<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
inconsistency between <strong>the</strong> two properties) begins <strong>to</strong> move away from <strong>the</strong><br />
original one and may even become opposite <strong>to</strong> it. This is how <strong>the</strong> souls<br />
are separated from <strong>the</strong> Crea<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
That is, <strong>the</strong> Crea<strong>to</strong>r originally created a desire, filled it with Himself,<br />
whereupon it started moving far<strong>the</strong>r and far<strong>the</strong>r away from Him,<br />
until it became completely opposite <strong>to</strong> Him.<br />
For example, when two people love each o<strong>the</strong>r, we say that <strong>the</strong>y merge<br />
with each o<strong>the</strong>r as one body. When <strong>the</strong>y hate each o<strong>the</strong>r, we say that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are as far from one ano<strong>the</strong>r as <strong>the</strong> east is from <strong>the</strong> west. However,<br />
it is not a question <strong>of</strong> near or far in this case.<br />
We define people in our world as close or distant <strong>to</strong> one ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
by <strong>the</strong> proximity between <strong>the</strong>ir bodies. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, we may speak<br />
about affinity or estrangement between <strong>the</strong> souls.<br />
Here <strong>the</strong> matter concerns <strong>the</strong> equivalence <strong>of</strong> properties, when each<br />
loves what <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r loves and hates what <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hates (i.e., if <strong>the</strong>y<br />
refer <strong>to</strong> all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir qualities in <strong>the</strong> same way), <strong>the</strong>y become lovers<br />
(similar in <strong>the</strong>ir properties) and merge with one ano<strong>the</strong>r. If <strong>the</strong>re is<br />
some change <strong>of</strong> form between <strong>the</strong>m, meaning that one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m likes<br />
something that <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hates, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> extent that <strong>the</strong>y differ in<br />
form, <strong>the</strong>y become distant and hateful <strong>to</strong> one ano<strong>the</strong>r. And if, for<br />
