ANNUAL REPORT OF THE ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
1982/83
As in previous years, the Siam Society continued to carry out its main lines of
activities during the year of 1982, namely the varied programmes of events and
functions held at the home of the Society as well as the popular excursions both within
the country and abroad.
With the help of wider publicity, attendance at our programmes is on the
increase and excursions are all well-subscribed.
Notes of our activities which appear in both Thai and English dailies enable
news of our Society to reach not only our members but also the public at large.
The installation of c1,1rtains in the hall had considerably improved the sound
system, whereas the new chairs lend an air of attractiveness to the hall and comfort
for our audience.
The Society is still faced 'Yith problems of storage space. Some of its publications
and books are temporarily stored in various places and are still in need of a nl:'w
storage site._ It was therefore suggested that the Society build shelves. and proper
shelter for the books in the open building next to the staff house at the rear of the hall.
Funds are needed for this project as well as for, the Kamthieog House which
must have its fence repaired or a new one built.
In addition to the Society's own programmes of regular lectures, film shows
and other events, our air-conditioned hall with its improved sound system was more
widely used by members and non-members alike for such occasions as receptions,
exhibitions, dinners, teas and wedding parties. .
Six tables and 160 chairs for use in the hall were purchased as the number of
chairs were found insufficient for the evening programmes when lectures/and performances
and dinner parties take place simultaneously.
MEMBERSHIP:
Membership in the Siam Society as of the end of December, 1982 was 1,244 in
the following categories : 375 life members, 845 ordinary members and 24 students
members. Mr. F. Gregory Groarke, one of the Society's members donated a sum of
10,000.00 Baht as financial assistance to qualified students who applied for student
member ship. Thus the number of student membership is hoped to increase.
To promote its membership, letters'have been sent to Diplomatic Missions in
Bangkok, The American Chamber of Commerce, The British Club and The Foreign
Correspondents Club, inviting their respective members to join the Society.
