4. The C<strong>of</strong>fee Industry<br />
The passage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hurricane resulted in <strong>the</strong> following damage to c<strong>of</strong>fee due to loss <strong>of</strong> berries,<br />
defoliation <strong>of</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee <strong>and</strong> shade trees, damage to c<strong>of</strong>fee trees as a result <strong>of</strong> falling branches from<br />
shade trees; <strong>and</strong> uprooting <strong>and</strong> twisting <strong>of</strong> young 2-3 year old plants resulting in severe root<br />
damage.<br />
It is projected that <strong>the</strong> 2007/2008 c<strong>of</strong>fee crop would have yielded 510,000 boxes <strong>of</strong> Blue<br />
Mountain c<strong>of</strong>fee <strong>and</strong> 90,000 boxes <strong>of</strong> non Blue Mountain c<strong>of</strong>fee. However, with preliminary<br />
estimates indicating that approximately 45 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total c<strong>of</strong>fee crop sustained severe<br />
damage, losses are estimated at 240,000 <strong>and</strong> 30,000 boxes for Blue Mountain <strong>and</strong> non-Blue<br />
Mountain c<strong>of</strong>fee at a value <strong>of</strong> $855 million.<br />
