after <strong>the</strong> hurricane’s passage. On average a total <strong>of</strong> 4-5 days <strong>of</strong> production time was lost. In <strong>the</strong><br />

Quarrying sub-sector production time was lost due to power outage. There were also reports <strong>of</strong><br />

ro<strong>of</strong> damage, slippage <strong>and</strong> damage to road infrastructure.<br />

Distributive Trade<br />

12. Services<br />

Preliminary investigations have revealed that distributors within <strong>the</strong> sector have suffered<br />

minimal damage due to Hurricane Dean. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> goods categories within <strong>the</strong> sector have<br />

reported damage associated with <strong>the</strong> hurricane. Damage which accrued to distributors included:<br />

1. inventory losses<br />

2. some major <strong>and</strong> minor structural damage; <strong>and</strong><br />

3. disruption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir production process.<br />

Perishable items which were lost were attributed to <strong>the</strong> power outage after <strong>the</strong> hurricane, <strong>and</strong> in<br />

some cases, pilferage.<br />

Tourism<br />

Damage to <strong>the</strong> tourist resort areas was estimated at $43.7 Million. Of this amount, $29.5 m<br />

occurred in <strong>the</strong> Accommodation Sub-sector while $14.1m was accounted for by <strong>the</strong> Attractions<br />

Sub-sector (Tables 3.13 <strong>and</strong> 3.14). The damage was mainly caused by <strong>the</strong> strong winds <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

associated storm surge. Extensive beach damage resulted from <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> storm surge<br />

particularly in <strong>the</strong> eastern <strong>and</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>. Some cruise ships were diverted from<br />

Jamaican ports after <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hurricane.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> South Coast Resort Area, a total <strong>of</strong> 13 entities reported extensive damage to <strong>the</strong>ir facilities;<br />

12 reported moderate damage; <strong>and</strong> 23 were identified as having minor damage. Accommodation<br />

providers reported damage to ro<strong>of</strong>, water tanks, generator, windows <strong>and</strong> some structural damage.<br />

Attractions report damage to l<strong>and</strong>scaping.<br />
