10. Irrigation<br />

Preliminary <strong>assessment</strong> indicates no significant structural damage to <strong>the</strong> irrigation <strong>and</strong> drainage<br />

infrastructure. However, fallen trees <strong>and</strong> debris in all districts resulted in blockage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

irrigation canal network, access roads <strong>and</strong> drainage network. The systems mainly affected are<br />

those located in St. Elizabeth, Clarendon <strong>and</strong> St. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine. The National Irrigation Commission<br />

(NIC) has commenced some clean up work in <strong>the</strong>se main districts. However, additional<br />

budgetary support is required to fully execute <strong>the</strong> recovery process in <strong>the</strong> shortest possible time.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> days following <strong>the</strong> event <strong>the</strong> pumping stations were without electricity supply. By<br />

September 3, 2007, two weeks after <strong>the</strong> event, electricity was restored to 25 per cent <strong>of</strong> stations<br />

in Clarendon <strong>and</strong> St. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine.<br />
