PROJECT TITLE: TO REHABILITATE DRAINAGE NETWORK<br />

Sector - Infrastructure<br />

Hurricane Dean caused extensive damage to road <strong>and</strong> drainage infrastructure in <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong><br />

St. Thomas, St. Andrew, St. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine, Clarendon, St. Mary, Portl<strong>and</strong>, St. Ann <strong>and</strong> St. James. In<br />

addition to limiting access to some areas, <strong>the</strong>re were threats to lives <strong>and</strong> property. The main<br />

objective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project is to undertake river training <strong>and</strong> gabion works to protect drainage<br />

network in <strong>the</strong> affected parishes. Specific activities include: bunding, desilting, gabion works,<br />

sea defence, <strong>and</strong> road restoration.<br />

PROJECT: HOUSING REHABILITATION<br />

Sector - Housing<br />

The considerable damage in <strong>the</strong> housing sector was mainly to houses where <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong> was<br />

designed <strong>and</strong> built by tradesmen. In order to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> building tradition <strong>of</strong> builders,<br />

training in hurricane resistant construction practices should be available to <strong>the</strong>m. Efforts are<br />

underway to carry out training in <strong>the</strong> affected areas, but this needs streng<strong>the</strong>ning <strong>and</strong> application<br />

across <strong>the</strong> country. An area <strong>of</strong> emphasis should be promoting <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> certified/qualified<br />

builders or tradesmen during construction.<br />

Objectives<br />

1. To develop relevant courses for building tradesmen in disaster resistant construction<br />

methods <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> courses at <strong>the</strong> local <strong>and</strong> national levels<br />

2. To upgrade <strong>and</strong> reprint <strong>and</strong> disseminate training manual<br />

3. To create a register <strong>of</strong> qualified construction workers<br />

HEART Trust NTA will be integral to <strong>the</strong> designing; delivery <strong>and</strong> institutionalization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

courses.<br />
