8.1 Preliminary Estimates of Production Losses
The Dairy Board is at this time (September 10) unable to present an overall financial estimate of
the impact of the hurricane on the sector as individual farms are still in the process of finalizing
their estimate of damage. Indications are, however, that damage to buildings, fences and animals
are minimal.
Based on information gleaned from contact with farmers, it is estimated that direct losses in milk
production as at August 28 is approximately 25 percent of daily production. From the July
production estimate of approximately 1.2 million litres, the estimated 25 percent loss of
production translates to approximately 96,700 litres of milk or equivalently $2.9 million during
the 10 day period since the hurricane.
The experience from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 suggests that, assuming a similarly early
resumption in electricity and water supply to affected areas, it may take up to three months to
resume pre-hurricane levels of production. On this basis the residual effects on revenues to dairy
farms is projected as follows:
