8.1 Preliminary Estimates <strong>of</strong> Production Losses<br />

The Dairy Board is at this time (September 10) unable to present an overall financial estimate <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>impact</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hurricane on <strong>the</strong> sector as individual farms are still in <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> finalizing<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir estimate <strong>of</strong> damage. Indications are, however, that damage to buildings, fences <strong>and</strong> animals<br />

are minimal.<br />

Based on information gleaned from contact with farmers, it is estimated that direct losses in milk<br />

production as at August 28 is approximately 25 percent <strong>of</strong> daily production. From <strong>the</strong> July<br />

production estimate <strong>of</strong> approximately 1.2 million litres, <strong>the</strong> estimated 25 percent loss <strong>of</strong><br />

production translates to approximately 96,700 litres <strong>of</strong> milk or equivalently $2.9 million during<br />

<strong>the</strong> 10 day period since <strong>the</strong> hurricane.<br />

The experience from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 suggests that, assuming a similarly early<br />

resumption in electricity <strong>and</strong> water supply to affected areas, it may take up to three months to<br />

resume pre-hurricane levels <strong>of</strong> production. On this basis <strong>the</strong> residual effects on revenues to dairy<br />

farms is projected as follows:<br />
