8. The Dairy Industry<br />

Dairy farmers located in <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn parishes <strong>of</strong> Jamaica were <strong>the</strong> ones most adversely affected<br />

by <strong>the</strong> passage <strong>of</strong> Hurricane Dean. The widespread dislocation in electricity <strong>and</strong> water supplies,<br />

however, resulted in isl<strong>and</strong>-wide negative <strong>impact</strong>s on <strong>the</strong> sector, ei<strong>the</strong>r directly or as a result <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong> milk purchases by <strong>the</strong> distributive trade.<br />

The major sources <strong>of</strong> losses to <strong>the</strong> sector were loss <strong>of</strong> milk production <strong>and</strong> revenue<br />

through:<br />

• Deliberate reduction in production by reducing feed to cattle to forestall<br />

dumping <strong>of</strong> milk<br />

• Reduction in production by cows due to lack <strong>of</strong> draining water supply<br />

• Absence <strong>of</strong> JPS electricity or st<strong>and</strong>by generators thus once per day h<strong>and</strong><br />

milking<br />
