• The term “historical recognized environmental conditions” is typically used to identify<br />

conditions of past releases that have been addressed to the satisfaction of the responsible<br />

regulatory agency. Historical recognized environmental conditions are defined in ASTM E<br />

1527-05 as “an environmental condition, which in the past would have been considered a<br />

recognized environmental condition, but which may or may not be considered a<br />

recognized environmental condition currently.”<br />

• A data gap is defined as a lack of or inability to obtain information required by this practice<br />

despite good faith efforts by the environmental professional to gather such information.<br />

Data gaps may result from incompleteness in any of the activities required by this practice,<br />

including, but not limited to <strong>site</strong> reconnaissance (for example, an inability to conduct the<br />

<strong>site</strong> visit), <strong>and</strong> interviews (for example, an inability to interview the key <strong>site</strong> manager,<br />

regulatory officials, etc.).<br />
