HAND AUGER SOIL SAMPLING PROTOCOLS Soil samples will be collected in laboratory-clean glass sample jars, and labeled with the designation, location, date and sampler. Collected samples will be preserved on ice and picked up by the analytical laboratory. V3 standard chain-of-custody procedures will be followed regarding the shipment and receipt of samples. A hand auger will be used at the Site, to provide for visual observation of subsurface conditions, and the collection of soil samples at depth. The materials will be returned to the “hole” in the same manner as removed. Collected soil samples are visually classified in the field by Site engineer or geologist, in accordance with ASTM D 2488-84. Sample lithology is recorded using the Unified Soil Classification System. Soil logs, documenting soil types and subsurface conditions, will be completed by V3’s Site engineer or geologist. During sampling activities, soils will be screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a photoionization detector (PID). VOCs are common components of a variety of environmental contaminants, including industrial solvents, petroleum products and a wide range of other industrial compounds. The PID is also used to monitor ambient air concentrations within the work zone during the sampling, in accordance with V3’s Site Safety Plan. Personal protective equipment is utilized by sampling personnel during sampling, as specified in the Site Safety Plan. Soil samples that are collected for laboratory analysis will be placed in appropriate sample containers in order of decreasing volatility. For each recovered soil sample, samples for possible VOC analysis will be collected directly from the recovered sample, in accordance with USEPA SW-846 Method 5035/8260. Laboratory provided preweighed vials containing the correct amount of preservatives will be used (10 ml of methanol per vial and a 20% solution of sodium bisulfate (1 gram of sodium bisulfate to 5 ml of water). All samples collected for VOCs will be obtained directly from the recovered sampler at the specified sample interval using a disposable plastic premeasured 5-gram syringe barrel provided by the laboratory. The barrel will be driven into the soil surface to remove the soil without exposure to air. The soil will then be extruded into one 40-ml vial preserved with methanol. The threads of the sample vial should be cleaned prior to capping. This process will be repeated until two 40-ml vials preserved with sodium bisulfate are also filled with 5-grams of soil each. One four ounce jar or smaller will then be filled with soil for dry weight analysis. The samples will be immediately capped, labeled, and placed on ice. For all additional analysis, the remaining portion of the recovered sample from the specified sample interval will be homogenized and placed into appropriate laboratory specified jars.
