4.3 REC 1 – FORMER DRY CLEANING OPERATIONS
The following sampling program was performed within REC 1:
A total of thirty-five borings (SM-GP-01 through SM-GP-09, SM-GP-13, SM-GP-15 through SM-
GP-18, SM-GP-102 through SM-GP-118, SM-MW-01 through SM-MW-04) were advanced by
V3 at the Site (Figure 3.2) from January 2008 to May 2009 to characterize potential subsurface
impacts associated with the former dry cleaning operations. These borings were advanced to a
maximum depth of 20 feet bgs. Refusal from large cobbles or bedrock was encountered at
most locations ranging in depth from 3 to 18.5 feet in the immediate vicinity of the former
operations. All of the borings inside the building hit refusal between 6 and 12 feet. The
locations of borings were adjusted based on tenant activities, interior washers, dryers and other
structures. Based on the location of historical operations on the south end of the building and
the passive soil gas survey (Section 2.7.4), the borings were advanced in locations that
corresponded with areas of probable impacts. Borings SM-GP-114 and SM-GP-115 were
located in the area of identified soil gas TPH C5-C9 (BTEX). Petroleum odors, staining and/or
elevated PID readings (>5 ppm) were observed in four borings (SM-GP-03, SM-GP-113, SM-
GP-117 and SM-MW-02).
Soil samples were analyzed for one or more of the following: VOCs, BTEX/MTBE, SVOCs,
PNAs, pesticides/PCBs, TAL metals, FOC and pH constituents. TPH was not analyzed
because oily or saturated soils were not observed.
Groundwater samples were collected from eleven temporary monitoring wells (SM-GP-07, SM-
GP-08, SM-GP-13, SM-GP-15 through 18, SM-GP-105, SM-GP-106, SM-GP-108 and SM-GP-
117) and five permanent monitoring wells (SM-GP-110 and SM-MW-01 through SM-MW-04) to
characterize Site groundwater conditions. Prior to groundwater sampling, one round of static
water level measurements was taken from the monitoring wells prior to commencing any
purging and sampling activities. The wells were purged and sampled using the micro-purge
low-flow method. Upon stabilization of field parameters, the following samples were collected:
VOCs, SVOCs, PNAs, TAL metals, PCBs, and pesticides. No evidence of odors or sheen was
noted in the groundwater samples.
The sampling locations for this REC are provided in Figure 3.2.
4.4 REC 2 – HYDRAULIC LIFTS
The following sampling program was performed to characterize REC 2:
A total of four borings (SM-GP-10 through SM-GP-12 and SM-GP-101) were advanced by V3 at
the Site in April 2008 and November 2008 to characterize potential subsurface impacts (Figure
3.2) associated with three hydraulic lifts on the south side of the building. These borings were
advanced to a maximum depth of 20 feet bgs. The borings were advanced in locations upgradient
and immediately down-gradient from the hydraulic lifts. No field indications of soil
contamination were observed in any of the borings advanced.
