Curriculum Vitae<br />

Noor Chris<strong>to</strong>ph was born <strong>in</strong> 1971. She f<strong>in</strong>ished VWO (prepara<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

scientific education) at the Pax Christi College <strong>in</strong> Druten <strong>in</strong> 1991.<br />

In that same year she went <strong>to</strong> Maastricht <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> achieve the Propaedeutic<br />

exam Gezondheidswetenschappen (Health sciences) from the<br />

Universiteit Maastricht <strong>in</strong> 1992. <strong>The</strong>n, she decided <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue study<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at the Rijks Universiteit Gron<strong>in</strong>gen where she graduated <strong>in</strong> educational<br />

psychology <strong>in</strong> 1997.<br />

From September 1997 until July 1998 she worked for Noldus Information<br />

Technology bv. <strong>in</strong> Wagen<strong>in</strong>gen <strong>in</strong> co-operation with Dr. Hans<br />

van de Sande from the Rijks Universiteit Gron<strong>in</strong>gen. She is co-author<br />

<strong>of</strong> a course book on systematic observation <strong>of</strong> behaviour (Chris<strong>to</strong>ph &<br />

Van de Sande, 1999). From August 1998 until December that year she<br />

worked for <strong>The</strong> Open University (Mil<strong>to</strong>n Keynes, <strong>The</strong> United K<strong>in</strong>gdom)<br />

<strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> cooperate <strong>in</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> fOCUS, a s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>to</strong>ol for<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g and support<strong>in</strong>g systematic behavioural observation (Oates et<br />

al., 2000).<br />

In January 1999 she started work<strong>in</strong>g for the department <strong>of</strong> Social Science<br />

Informatics (SWI) at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Currently<br />

this group is known as the Human Computer Studies (HCS) labora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

She was <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the EC-funded project LILIENTHAL which aimed<br />

at develop<strong>in</strong>g and evaluat<strong>in</strong>g a Distance Learn<strong>in</strong>g Platform for the theoretical<br />

<strong>in</strong>struction <strong>of</strong> air traffic pilots. From 2000 she was <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>in</strong> the EC-funded KITS project. This project aimed at develop<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

evaluat<strong>in</strong>g a gam<strong>in</strong>g-simulation environment for the doma<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Knowledge<br />

Management. Besides project <strong>in</strong>volvement she taught a diversity <strong>of</strong><br />

courses <strong>to</strong> SWI and Information Science students, rang<strong>in</strong>g from research<br />

methods and techniques for the social sciences <strong>to</strong> human-computer <strong>in</strong>teraction<br />

and computer-mediated communication. An important part <strong>of</strong><br />

her work at SWI/HCS was devoted <strong>to</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g research that resulted<br />

<strong>in</strong> this PhD thesis.
