VERTICAL SPINDLES<br />

For vertical axis spindles, special attention must be paid to the<br />

lubrication and sealing. Modified sealing is required to prevent the<br />

coolant from contaminating the lubricant when the spindle nose<br />

bearing is at the upper position (Figure 65).<br />

In the case of grease lubrication, deflectors have to be installed to<br />

prevent grease migration away from the bearing cavity. Alternatively,<br />

when oil lubrication is adopted and the nose bearing is at the lower<br />

position, a system to collect and extract the oil has to be provided<br />

to prevent leakage (Figure 66).<br />
