Degree Options<br />

The Associate of Arts (A.A.) and Associate of Science (A.S.) degrees allow students to attend UACCM and <strong>complete</strong> the general education<br />

<strong>requirements</strong> of a baccalaureate degree program be<strong>for</strong>e transferring to a four-year institution. The courses required <strong>for</strong> the Associate of Arts<br />

and Associate of Science degrees meet the general education <strong>requirements</strong> of most senior institutions in the state and may give students more<br />

opportunity <strong>for</strong> full transferability of credits.<br />

<strong>college</strong> <strong>in<strong>for</strong>mation</strong><br />

The Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) degree, with a track in middle-level math/science or language arts/social studies, is a two-year<br />

transfer degree designed to introduce students to the teaching profession and help address the teacher shortage in Arkansas. The degree<br />

is in alignment with state licensure in middle school teaching in these track areas and maximizes the hours that students can take be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

transferring to a four-year university to <strong>complete</strong> their bachelor’s degree in education. The Associate of Arts in Teaching degree, with a track<br />

in early childhood education (P-4), is designed <strong>for</strong> individuals who wish to obtain a bachelor’s degree in education in order to teach preschool<br />

through 4th grade.<br />

The Associate of Science in Business (A.S.B.) is a two-year transfer degree specifically designed <strong>for</strong> students planning to pursue a four-year<br />

degree in business.<br />

The Certificate of General Studies consists of a minimum of 31 credit hours and contains general education core courses. The Certificate of<br />

General Studies is designed <strong>for</strong> those students who are taking general education courses at UACCM but plan to transfer to another <strong>college</strong><br />

be<strong>for</strong>e completing an associate degree at UACCM.<br />

The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree combine classroom instruction with “hands-on” training in a variety of technical, business,<br />

health, and service-related career fields. These programs are designed to prepare individuals to enter the job market. The Associate of Applied<br />

Science degree is designed <strong>for</strong> employment purposes, and it should not be assumed that the degree or the courses in the degree can be<br />

transferred to another institution. While a few institutions have recently begun to accept some courses in A.A.S. programs, the general rule<br />

is that courses in A.A.S. degrees are not accepted in transfer toward bachelor’s degrees. Students to whom transfer is important should get<br />

assurances in writing in advance from the institution to which they wish to transfer.<br />

The Associate of General Studies (A.G.S.) degree is designed to give students cross-training in a variety of fields. The degree requires a<br />

minimum of 15 credit hours of general education core courses and 45 hours of technical/career courses. The general education courses within<br />

the A.G.S. degree are usually transferable; however, technical courses are usually not transferable.<br />

Technical Certificates are typically two to three semesters in length and provide entry-level skills in specific technical, business, health, and<br />

service-oriented career fields.<br />

Certificates of Proficiency are typically one to two semesters in length. The Certificate of Proficiency in dietary management follows<br />

the curriculum prescribed by the Dietary Managers Association. The Certificate of Proficiency in early childhood development provides<br />

coursework <strong>for</strong> students desiring to pursue the CDA-credential. The Certificate of Proficiency in Emergency Medical Technician prepares<br />

students to take the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Examination. Certificates of Proficiency in Computer In<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

Systems Technology are offered in the areas of computer maintenance and networking technology. The Nursing Assisting Certificate of<br />

Proficiency is an approved training program that meets state and federal <strong>requirements</strong> and prepares graduates to provide caregiving in longterm<br />

care facilities, home health agencies, and hospitals assisting dependent elderly, home care clients, and hospital patients. Certificates of<br />

Proficiency in welding are offered in the areas of structural welding and pipe welding. A Certificate of Proficiency is also offered in petroleum<br />

technology.
