PRACTICAL NURSING<br />

The practical nursing program prepares students <strong>for</strong> the national licensure exam <strong>for</strong> practical nurses. Students spend time in the classroom<br />

and in clinical experiences. Instruction consists of theory and supervised practice in areas required by the State Board of Nursing. Clinical<br />

labs are <strong>complete</strong>d in nursing homes, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Clinical practicum is planned to provide students with varied<br />

experiences; there<strong>for</strong>e, students may have a portion of their clinical experience in facilities in Conway, Pope, Faulkner, Van Buren, Yell,<br />

or Johnson Counties. Other areas may be utilized as the need arises. Students who <strong>complete</strong> the program will be eligible to apply <strong>for</strong> the<br />

National Licensure Exam <strong>for</strong> Practical Nursing.<br />

A grade of “C” is necessary to pass each of the required practical nursing courses. Students who do not meet this requirement must apply<br />

<strong>for</strong> re-admission to the Academic Standards Committee be<strong>for</strong>e being permitted to continue in the program. Students should consult the<br />

Admissions Office <strong>for</strong> specific selection criteria <strong>for</strong> admission to the nursing program. Admission to the College does not necessarily qualify<br />

a student <strong>for</strong> admission to the Practical Nursing program. Students earn a technical certificate upon completion of the program <strong>requirements</strong>.<br />

Practical Nursing Program Admissions Process.<br />

Admission into the UACCM Practical Nursing (PN) program is a competitive process. A class of 24 students is started each Spring and<br />

Summer. There are a number of steps which must be <strong>complete</strong>d be<strong>for</strong>e a student can be considered <strong>for</strong> the PN program.<br />

1. Students attempting to enter a class must be admitted to the <strong>college</strong> by March 1 <strong>for</strong> the Summer semester and October 1 <strong>for</strong> the Spring<br />

semester.<br />

Nursing • Practical Nursing<br />

2. Placement test scores must be submitted to the Nursing Office with the application. All applicants are required to take the Test of<br />

Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) produced by Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC to be eligible <strong>for</strong> consideration. The TEAS will<br />

be offered prior to the application deadline. Students will only be allowed to take the TEAS one time per application period. Only<br />

TEAS scores given at UACCM within the last three years will be considered. The TEAS scores used from a previous application period<br />

must include all four sections. The student must be eligible to make application to the Practical Nursing Program be<strong>for</strong>e making<br />

an appointment to the take the TEAS test. The student must contact the Nursing Department secretary at 501-977-2049 to make an<br />

appointment <strong>for</strong> the TEAS test.<br />

3. Students must:<br />

a. Complete the following required courses with a “C” or higher: BIOL 2004 Human Anatomy and Physiology I, BIOL 2014<br />

Human Anatomy and Physiology II, and NUTR 1503 Nutrition.<br />

b. Students who score below these placement levels must <strong>complete</strong> the following required courses prior to entering the nursing<br />

program.<br />

19 – ACT English 80 – COMPASS Writing<br />

19 – ACT Reading 83 – COMPASS Reading<br />

16 – ACT Mathematics 34 – COMPASS Pre-Algebra<br />

21 – COMPASS Algebra<br />

Courses that may be required are<br />

ACAD 0324 Language Arts<br />

ACAD 0412 College Success<br />

MATH 1233 Math <strong>for</strong> Technical Programs
