Prerequisite: None. Note: See page 139 <strong>for</strong> exemptions. The course is required <strong>for</strong> all students who are new to the UACCM campus and are<br />

enrolled in at least six semester hours. This course is designed to prepare students to be successful in their <strong>college</strong> career at UACCM.<br />

Students will learn how to use the library resources and other campus and classroom software. Students will learn about campus policies and<br />

regulations, financial aid opportunities, and other services available on UACCM’s campus. Basic study techniques, planning future course<br />

schedules, and setting academic goals will be discussed.<br />

ACAD 0123 Foundations of Mathematics .............................................................3 Cr. (3 Lec.)<br />

Prerequisite: ACT Math score of 15 or below, COMPASS Pre-Algebra score of 33 or below. Offered fall and spring semesters. The content of this course<br />

includes basic operations on whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ratio and proportion, percent, signed numbers, and basic algebra will<br />

also be covered. Students must <strong>complete</strong> this course with a “C” or better in order to advance to the next math course.<br />

Prerequisite: ACT Reading score of 17-18, COMPASS Reading Skills score of 77-82 This reading course provides instruction and practice to improve<br />

vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking on a <strong>college</strong> level. A student must earn a grade of “C” or higher to successfully pass the<br />

course.<br />

Prerequisite: ACT Reading score of 18 or below and English score of 18 or below, COMPASS Reading score of 82 or below and Writing score of 79 or below.<br />

Co-requisite: Concurrently enrolled in ACAD 0412 College Success. Language Arts is a fundamental reading and writing course that prepares<br />

students <strong>for</strong> academic-level reading and writing. The course focuses on in-depth reading comprehension, writing grounded in critical<br />

thinking, effective essay development, and practical grammar skills. Students must <strong>complete</strong> this course with a “C” or better in order to<br />

advance to ENG 1013 Composition I or ENG 1003 Basic Technical Communications.<br />

Prerequisite: ACT English score of 16-18 and ACT Reading score of 19 or greater, COMPASS Writing score of 60-79 and COMPASS Reading score of<br />

83 or greater. Co-requisite: Concurrently enrolled in ENG 1013 Composition I. ALP (Accelerated Learning Program) English is designed to work<br />

in conjunction with ENG 1013. ALP covers the same principles as Composition I (principles and techniques of expository and persuasive<br />

composition, analysis of texts with introduction to research methods, and critical thinking) but is focused on spending additional time on<br />

problem areas <strong>for</strong> individual students. In addition, ALP English emphasizes strong literacy based on the belief that improved language skills<br />

in general make better writers.<br />

Prerequisite: None. This course is designed to help students feel com<strong>for</strong>table in a <strong>college</strong> classroom setting. Students will learn how <strong>college</strong><br />

differs from high school by focusing on the following areas: teaching and learning styles, note-taking, test-taking, organization techniques,<br />

stress and time management, and memorization techniques.<br />

ACAD 0412 College Success .........................................................................2 Cr. (2 Lec.)<br />

Prerequisite: None. Offered in the fall and spring semesters. This course is designed to help the student become a vital member of the UACCM<br />

community, overcome obstacles, and to provide the necessary tools <strong>for</strong> lifelong learning. <strong>To</strong>pics <strong>for</strong> this course focus on the following<br />

areas: learning styles, studying techniques, note-taking, test-taking, organizational techniques, stress and time management, memorization<br />

techniques, and setting goals <strong>for</strong> the future.
