One semester of Six-Credit Italian is equivalent to a two<br />
semester sequence of 3 credits. This course is directed towards<br />
the acquisition of more complex structures to express personal<br />
opinions and preferences. By the end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />
should be able to show a high <strong>de</strong>gree of un<strong>de</strong>rstanding of<br />
complex written and spoken texts and respond appropriately<br />
to them, both orally and in writing. Key grammatical topics<br />
inclu<strong>de</strong>: review of previous level contents; past perfect;<br />
prepositions; combined, in<strong>de</strong>finite and interrogative pronouns;<br />
present and past conditional; linking words; impersonal<br />

This program aims to give the stu<strong>de</strong>nts the possibility to<br />
combine a full immersion in Italian language with an in-<strong>de</strong>pth<br />
experience of Italian culture. During an aca<strong>de</strong>mic semester four<br />
levels will be covered on condition that stu<strong>de</strong>nts pass a final<br />
exam for each course. For every level stu<strong>de</strong>nts will obtain 4<br />
credits (out of the total 16) on condition that he/she receive<br />
a “C-” or higher. Each level consists of 60 contact hours. All<br />
classes are held in Italian. Ample time is also <strong>de</strong>dicated to<br />
activities whose objective is to <strong>de</strong>epen knowledge of Italian<br />
society and culture and enable stu<strong>de</strong>nts to interact directly with<br />
local community through interviews, research and fieldtrips.<br />

6-Credit Italian Language Intermediate 2 and<br />
Advanced 1<br />

One semester of Six-Credit Italian is equivalent to a two<br />
semester sequence of 3 credits. This course introduces<br />
stu<strong>de</strong>nts to contemporary Italian society by exploiting different<br />
sources including literature, the media and press. By the end<br />
of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able to un<strong>de</strong>rstand most TV<br />
news and information on current affairs; read contemporary<br />
literary prose; write texts about a wi<strong>de</strong> range of subjects;<br />
achieve the <strong>de</strong>gree of confi<strong>de</strong>nce with the language that<br />
makes communication fluid and clear. Key grammatical topics<br />
inclu<strong>de</strong>: consolidation of all past tenses; relative and combined<br />
pronouns; past conditional; consolidation of subjunctive mood;<br />
future perfect; reported speech (first level); passive voice;<br />
conditional clauses; gerund and Infinitive; some uses of the<br />
impersonal form. Key thematic areas inclu<strong>de</strong>: foreign words<br />
commonly used in Italian; the media world; life in Italian towns;<br />
environmental issues; Italian novelists; family today; Italian<br />

One semester of Six-Credit Italian is equivalent to a two<br />
semester sequence of 3 credits. This course is for stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />
who already have a solid grammatical/lexical basis. By the<br />
end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able to formulate i<strong>de</strong>as<br />
and opinions with precision and recognize a wi<strong>de</strong> range of<br />
idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms, as well as apply<br />
register shifts. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: consolidation<br />
of previous levels; past conditional; subjunctive clauses;<br />
conditional clauses; passive forms in contrast; relative pronouns<br />
in contrast; impersonal forms; verbs + prepositions; compound<br />
