Printmaking<br />

Basic Printmaking<br />

This course is an introduction to the various techniques of<br />

black and white printmaking, such as etching (hard ground,<br />

soft ground, aquatint, sugar lift, dry point, pastel, spit bite<br />

and mixed media), woodcut and linoleum cut. The art and<br />

technique of reproducing and printing metal plates, wood<br />

panels, linoleum and other matrixes will be thoroughly<br />

investigated and un<strong>de</strong>rstood. In learning the above techniques<br />

and methods, constant reference will be ma<strong>de</strong> to printmaking,<br />

not only as a very old process practiced in Italy and in the<br />

rest of Europe during and after the Renaissance (Mantegna,<br />

Pollaiolo, Parmigianino, Rembrandt, Goya), but also as a<br />

mo<strong>de</strong>rn approach (De Chirico, Carrà, Picasso, Munch, Seurat).<br />

Etching<br />

The course is a study of the various techniques of color and<br />

black/white etching, such as intaglio, aquatints, soft ground,<br />

super aquatint and photo etching. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will also study the<br />

printing process: the art and technique of reproducing a metal<br />

matrix by means of a printing (calcographic) press. Emphasis<br />

will be put on two-dimensional pictorial constructions, creative<br />

interpretation of the figure, still-life compositions, nature and<br />

geometric structures. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will also learn about form,<br />

value, line and composition. Through these processes, stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

will enhance their personal expression as well as focus on all<br />

technical and skill-related information necessary to begin with<br />

the matrix and finish with the art print. Various problems will<br />

be presented, aimed at promoting individual response and<br />

creativity. Reference to the exceptional works of art insi<strong>de</strong> and<br />

outsi<strong>de</strong> the city of Florence will be investigated and analyzed<br />

as an integral part of the course.<br />

Printmaking Portfolio<br />

This course allows stu<strong>de</strong>nts to <strong>de</strong>velop a personal and<br />

contemporary approach to the etching medium (color<br />

etching, photo gravure, plexiglas relief, computer process,<br />

etc.). Emphasis is placed on the <strong>de</strong>velopment (planning and<br />

execution) and style that will result in complete and refined<br />

art book production. The purpose of the course is to prepare<br />

stu<strong>de</strong>nts to enter the professional world while stimulating their<br />

individual creativity and personal style.<br />

Prerequisites: Junior standing<br />

woo<strong>de</strong>n objects, and gold-gil<strong>de</strong>d works of art and frames) by<br />

using various methods of wood conservation appropriate for<br />

each individual subject found in the lab. Accurate lab records<br />

will be taken and actual hands-on practice with the guidance of<br />

an experienced professor will give the stu<strong>de</strong>nts a realistic i<strong>de</strong>a<br />

of the maneuvers and methods found in a genuine professional<br />

studio environment.<br />

Fresco Painting and Restoration I<br />

The stu<strong>de</strong>nt will be introduced to all phases of the art of fresco<br />

painting by preparing a small fresco which can be transported.<br />

Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will learn the ancient technique of fresco by using<br />

original techniques such as the enlargement of a master<br />

drawing (stu<strong>de</strong>nt’s choice), mixing fresco mortar (intonaco),<br />

and the use of pigments for painting fresco. Each stu<strong>de</strong>nt<br />

will also make a sinopia (preliminary painting for fresco), and<br />

complete a small fresco to then be <strong>de</strong>tached as an exercise in<br />

fresco conservation.<br />

This course covers all types of painting conservation methods<br />

such as the preservation of a work of art, relining, consolidation,<br />

cleaning and in-painting. Direct contact with minor original<br />

works of art allows beginning stu<strong>de</strong>nts to observe the problems<br />

and methods that are presented to a restorer. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will learn<br />

how to apply basic conservation techniques through handson<br />

experience in or<strong>de</strong>r to acquire confi<strong>de</strong>nce and knowledge<br />

in the reconnaissance of old paintings and their conservation<br />

needs. Techniques for the conservation of polychrome woo<strong>de</strong>n<br />

sculpture will be introduced, especially mechanical cleaning<br />

methods, preserving, and aesthetic in-painting methods.<br />
