practical work of watercolor techniques, drawing, sketching<br />
and painting in Florence and in the Tuscan countrysi<strong>de</strong>. Three<br />
of the four course weeks will be held at the school premises<br />
in Florence, where the stu<strong>de</strong>nts will work with mo<strong>de</strong>ls, still<br />
life and other set-ups in the studio. The class will also visit<br />
various gar<strong>de</strong>ns and fantastic panoramas. One of the four<br />
course weeks will be held in the Chianti Classico region near<br />
the medieval villages of Radda and Gaiole in Chianti, where the<br />
stu<strong>de</strong>nts will learn how to draw, sketch and paint in the Tuscan<br />
countrysi<strong>de</strong>. The stu<strong>de</strong>nts will practice through daily field<br />
trips in the magnificent scenery of the Sienese Chianti, hiking<br />
along the trails of one of the most famous and spectacular<br />
countrysi<strong>de</strong>s in the world. During this week, the stu<strong>de</strong>nts will be<br />
housed in a traditional and picturesque agriturismo. The culture<br />
and history of the Chianti region will be analyzed for a better<br />
un<strong>de</strong>rstanding of the human and architectural environment.<br />
Basically this workshop focuses on observation; emphasis is on<br />
the creative interpretation of the figure, object compositions,<br />
nature and open air painting. Form, value, line and proportions<br />
will be studied as means of <strong>de</strong>termining space, shape, volume<br />
and composition. Activities inclu<strong>de</strong> the study of watercolor<br />
and mixed media techniques; the study of color theory (tone,<br />
light, value); and the analysis of the structure of a painting in its<br />
whole, in <strong>de</strong>tail, and in the relationship between <strong>de</strong>tails.<br />

with emphasis on the creative interpretation of the figure,<br />

The lessons inclu<strong>de</strong> the study of watercolor and mixed media<br />

This course consists of gathering research in the traditional form<br />
of sketching from the museums, streets, and environments of<br />
Florence as artists have done for centuries. This inclu<strong>de</strong>s working<br />
from sculptures, paintings, architecture, formal gar<strong>de</strong>ns, as<br />
well as drawing from life in the streets and markets. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />
will be encouraged to write annotations and observations as<br />
well as to investigate their areas of interest. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts gain<br />
firsthand knowledge of original works by studying them in situ,<br />
learn drawing and painting skills in a refreshing way, and learn<br />
to create professional sketchbooks that may serve as source<br />
material for future projects.<br />

This special summer course takes place both in Florence and<br />
in the Chianti region. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will learn about the study and<br />

Imagination in Drawing<br />

Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will <strong>de</strong>velop projects <strong>de</strong>riving from classical and<br />
medieval iconography: alphabets, playing cards, imaginary<br />
beasts, and natural curiosities among others. The goal is to<br />
create a personal interpretation of the iconography of the past.<br />
The stu<strong>de</strong>nts will be gui<strong>de</strong>d in their search for the appropriate<br />
graphic means of expression, along with an equally attentive<br />
research of materials such as hand-ma<strong>de</strong> and water-marked<br />
paper colored by the stu<strong>de</strong>nts, silver-point, pen and ink, and<br />
sanguine drawing instruments. The size of surfaces will be<br />
rather small, taking into consi<strong>de</strong>ration the precision of the<br />
drawing methods employed. The main aim of the course is<br />
to give free rein to stu<strong>de</strong>nts’ imaginations while maintaining<br />
a constant link to the observation of reality: the human form,<br />
animals and natural forms. The classes will be supplemented by<br />
lectures, sli<strong>de</strong>s and reproductions.<br />

This course is a study of two-dimensional watercolor and<br />
tempera/gouache media and materials with importance<br />
on traditional concepts, form and imagery. Transparent<br />
and opaque techniques will be analyzed. Emphasis is on<br />
creative interpretation, from observation of the figure, object<br />
composition, nature and open air painting. Form, value, line,<br />
and proportions will be studied as means of <strong>de</strong>termining space,<br />
shape, volume, and composition. Various problems will be<br />
given aimed at stimulating individual response and creativity.<br />
Emphasis will be put on technical proficiency and creative<br />
expression. Reference to the exceptional works of art in the city<br />
of Florence will be investigated and analyzed as an integral part<br />
of the course.<br />

Tempera/Gouache and Egg Tempera Media<br />

This course is a study of two dimensional tempera/gouache<br />
and egg tempera media and materials, with importance on<br />
traditional form and imagery (such as objects, mo<strong>de</strong>ls, and<br />
nature). Transparent and opaque techniques will be analyzed.<br />
There will be studio approaches to painting techniques and<br />
pictorial organization. Both media will be also investigated<br />
from a mo<strong>de</strong>rn and contemporary perception of the world.<br />
Space, value, line, and proportions will be studied as a means<br />
of <strong>de</strong>termining shape, volume, and composition. Study<br />
and interaction of color will be discussed. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will be<br />
introduced to the preparation of canvas and/or woo<strong>de</strong>n boards<br />
for egg tempera (antique method). Various problems will be<br />
given aimed at stimulating individual response and creativity.<br />
Emphasis will be placed on technical proficiency and creative<br />
expression.<br />
