Rome Sketchbook - Beginning<br />

In this course stu<strong>de</strong>nts <strong>de</strong>velop basic observation, drawing and<br />

watercolor skills in a refreshing way. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts keep a series of<br />

sketchbooks and <strong>de</strong>velop finished drawing projects from them.<br />

After initial training in fundamental drawing techniques for<br />

pencil, pen and other media, the course is <strong>de</strong>dicated principally<br />

to sketching outdoors in the city and environs. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

<strong>de</strong>velop ability in representing a variety of subjects, including<br />

the human form, architecture, and landscape. Exploiting<br />

the advantages of the site, stu<strong>de</strong>nts explore such themes as<br />

historical monuments, street life, and formal gar<strong>de</strong>ns. They<br />

encounter art of the past, including efforts to sketch the same or<br />

similar topics. The course equips stu<strong>de</strong>nts to efficiently capture<br />

impressions by drawing in various media at various rates and<br />

scales, keeping annotations, i<strong>de</strong>as, sketches, and analyses of<br />

artwork in a journal, and <strong>de</strong>veloping personal interests. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

engage with the unrivalled visual and historic riches of Rome,<br />

from ancient Roman ruins and buildings, to exuberant Baroque<br />

churches and piazzas, and mo<strong>de</strong>rn structures, immersed in the<br />

bustle of a mo<strong>de</strong>rn metropolis.<br />

Rome Sketchbook<br />

The Rome sketchbook course is based on outdoor drawing<br />

among the monuments and ruins of Rome. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will learn<br />

techniques for capturing <strong>de</strong>tail and atmosphere with pencil and<br />

watercolor sketches, which can then be used as a reference<br />

to create more complex paintings in the studio. This process<br />

was followed by landscape painters such as Corot and Turner,<br />

who left a large body of travel sketchbooks. Many landscape<br />

painters took the Grand Tour around Italy, a principal part of<br />

which was a prolonged stay in Rome. The course will inclu<strong>de</strong><br />

a study of the various sketching techniques of 18th and 19th<br />

century painters.<br />

Watercolor and Tempera/Gouache<br />

This course is a study of two-dimensional watercolor and<br />

tempera/gouache media and materials with emphasis on<br />

traditional concepts, form and imagery. Transparent and<br />

opaque techniques will be analyzed. The course inclu<strong>de</strong>s studio<br />

approaches to painting techniques and pictorial organization as<br />

well as creative landscape painting in the open air. Form, value,<br />

line, and proportions will be studied as means of <strong>de</strong>termining<br />

space, shape, volume, and composition. Various problems will<br />

be presented aimed at encouraging individual response and<br />

creativity. Emphasis will be put on technical proficiency and<br />

creative expression.<br />

Introduction to Art Therapy<br />

At a time when concepts of education were being re<strong>de</strong>fined<br />

in the late 1400s, Leonardo da Vinci recommen<strong>de</strong>d that in<br />

addition to reading, writing and arithmetic, all stu<strong>de</strong>nts be<br />

taught to draw. He was ignored, to the misfortune of later<br />

stu<strong>de</strong>nts. This course is an introduction to the vast area of the<br />

therapeutic possibilities of art and specifically of drawing. The<br />

course intends to transmit the experience of an artist to all<br />

stu<strong>de</strong>nts. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts learn that drawing is a perceptive attitu<strong>de</strong><br />

using all the senses, and <strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt upon intuition and intellect.<br />

In<strong>de</strong>ed, we can learn this from those with sense <strong>de</strong>privations:<br />

the blind draw unexpected and original drawings; the <strong>de</strong>af have<br />

a special rapport with space, images and the act of drawing.<br />

Whether they are lifelong practitioners or have never drawn<br />

before, all stu<strong>de</strong>nts in the course will “start all over again”, and<br />

un<strong>de</strong>r the instructor’s guidance they will watch their personal<br />

art evolve. The course will enable stu<strong>de</strong>nts to translate their<br />

emotions into an expressive capacity.<br />

Introduction to Digital Photography<br />

The course provi<strong>de</strong>s a basic approach to how the photographic<br />

digital camera works. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts gain a broad knowledge of<br />

the history of photography and an appreciation of aesthetic<br />

concerns that enable them to express themselves in a more<br />

cohesive and creative manner. Basic classic photography skills<br />

including an un<strong>de</strong>rstanding of focal length, aperture, shutter<br />

speed, composition, and quality of light are integrated with<br />

techniques specific to digital capture and the manipulation of<br />

images in Photoshop. Photoshop software is used to process<br />

and print photographic imagery. During the semester specific<br />

assignments help stu<strong>de</strong>nts to learn all basic digital techniques.<br />

In the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts acquire confi<strong>de</strong>nce in knowing how<br />

to use their camera well, increased technical control of the<br />

medium, and a more critical eye. This course is 100% digital.<br />

Note: each stu<strong>de</strong>nt must be equipped with an SLR digital<br />

camera with manual function and with at least one lens.<br />
