16-Credit Italian Intermediate 2, Advanced 1,<br />

This program aims to give the stu<strong>de</strong>nts the possibility to<br />

combine a full immersion in Italian language with an in-<strong>de</strong>pth<br />

experience of Italian culture. During an aca<strong>de</strong>mic semester four<br />

levels will be covered on condition that stu<strong>de</strong>nts pass a final<br />

exam for each course. For every level stu<strong>de</strong>nts will obtain 4<br />

credits (out of the total 16) on condition that he/she receive<br />

a “C-” or higher. Each level consists of 60 contact hours. All<br />

classes are held in Italian. Ample time is also <strong>de</strong>dicated to<br />

activities whose objective is to <strong>de</strong>epen knowledge of Italian<br />

society and culture and enable stu<strong>de</strong>nts to interact directly with<br />

local community through interviews, research and fieldtrips.<br />

The 4-Credit Intermediate 2 level, which is part of the 16-Credit<br />

Italian program, is <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who already have an<br />

active knowledge of the main structures of the Italian language.<br />

By completing the study of more complex language structures,<br />

stu<strong>de</strong>nts will be able to give reasons and explanations for<br />

opinions and plans. By the end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be<br />

able to un<strong>de</strong>rstand the main points of radio and TV programs,<br />

newspaper and magazine articles and simple literary passages.<br />

Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: passato remoto and trapassato<br />

prossimo; past conditional; consolidation of subjunctive mood;<br />

passive form; conditional clauses; implicit forms. Key thematic<br />

The 4-Credit Elementary 1 level, which is part of the 16-Credit<br />

Italian program, is <strong>de</strong>signed for absolute beginner stu<strong>de</strong>nts who<br />

have never studied Italian before. Its aim is to give the basis<br />

of the language, allowing stu<strong>de</strong>nts to face the most common<br />

everyday situations by expressing themselves in the present<br />

and in the past tense. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: <strong>de</strong>finite<br />

and in<strong>de</strong>finite articles; regular and most common irregular verbs<br />

in the present tense; modal verbs; most common prepositions;<br />

regular and irregular present perfect; direct pronouns; the verb<br />

piacere; interrogative pronouns; impersonal form. Key thematic<br />

areas inclu<strong>de</strong>: introducing oneself; at the restaurant; spare<br />

The 4-Credit Elementary 2 level, which is part of the 16-Credit<br />

Italian program, is <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have completed<br />

one semester of Italian and already have a basic vocabulary and<br />

knowledge of elementary structures of the language. By the<br />

end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able to communicate in<br />

simple and routine tasks requiring an exchange of information<br />

on familiar and routine matters, to <strong>de</strong>scribe his/her background,<br />

immediate environment and matters related to areas relevant<br />

to everyday life. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will learn new forms to express past<br />

actions and future events. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>:<br />

reflexive verbs; possessives; comparatives; imperfect versus<br />

present perfect; introduction to conditional; “stare” + gerund;<br />

relative pronouns; direct and indirect pronouns. Key thematic<br />

The 4-Credit Intermediate 1 level, which is part of the<br />

16-Credit Italian program, is directed towards the acquisition<br />

of more complex structures to express personal opinions and<br />

preferences. By the end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be<br />

able to enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are<br />

familiar; to relate the plot of a book or film; to write correct<br />

texts on topics of personal interest. Key grammatical topics<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong>: imperative forms; <strong>de</strong>grees of comparison: adverbs and<br />

adjectives; future tense; introduction to subjunctive; combined<br />

and relative pronouns; trapassato prossimo; past conditional;<br />

4-Credit Italian Language Advanced 1<br />

The 4-Credit Advanced 1 level, which is part of the 16-Credit<br />

Italian program, is <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have a solid<br />

grammatical /lexical background in Italian, have already<br />

completed the study of complex language structures. By the<br />

end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able to un<strong>de</strong>rstand most<br />

TV news and current affairs programs, contemporary literary<br />

prose, write clear texts about a range of subjects including<br />

reports, passing information, or giving reasons in support or<br />

against a particular point of view. They should be able to interact<br />

with a <strong>de</strong>gree of fluency with native speakers to take active part<br />

in discussions. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: review of the<br />

subjunctive, conditional and indicative mood; passive forms in<br />

contrast; linking words; articles and prepositions. Key thematic<br />

areas inclu<strong>de</strong>: issues in contemporary Italian arts, history and<br />

The 4-Credit Advanced 2 level, which is part of the 16-Credit<br />

Italian program, is <strong>de</strong>signed for those stu<strong>de</strong>nts fluent in<br />

Italian. By the end of the semester stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able<br />

to un<strong>de</strong>rstand most TV news and current affairs programs,<br />

contemporary literary prose, write clear texts about a wi<strong>de</strong><br />

range of subjects without much effort, interact with high <strong>de</strong>gree<br />

of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers. By working<br />

with different types of authentic materials and by completing<br />

the in-<strong>de</strong>pth grammar review stu<strong>de</strong>nts will achieve a high level<br />

of language fluency, they will be able to formulate i<strong>de</strong>as and<br />

opinions with precision, to un<strong>de</strong>rstand television programs and<br />
