3-Credit Italian Language Elementary 1<br />

This course is for absolute beginner stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have<br />

never studied Italian before. Its aim is to give the basis of the<br />

language, allowing stu<strong>de</strong>nts to <strong>de</strong>al with the most common<br />

everyday situations by expressing themselves in the present<br />

and past tenses. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: <strong>de</strong>finite and<br />

in<strong>de</strong>finite articles; noun-adjective agreement; present tense of<br />

regular and main irregular verbs; prepositions; direct pronouns;<br />

present perfect; possessive adjectives. Key thematic areas<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong>: shopping for food; in a restaurant; daily life and spare<br />

time; travelling; vacations; the family.<br />

3-Credit Italian Language Elementary 2<br />

This course is <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have completed one<br />

semester (or equivalent) of Italian and already have a basic<br />

vocabulary and knowledge of elementary structures of the<br />

language. By the end of the semester stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able<br />

to complete simple and routine tasks requiring an exchange of<br />

information on familiar matters, to <strong>de</strong>scribe their background<br />

and issues related to everyday life. Key grammatical topics<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong>: review of Elementary 1 course contents; simple and<br />

compound prepositions; reflexive verbs; future; imperfect<br />

tense; indirect pronouns; introduction to present conditional.<br />

Key thematic areas inclu<strong>de</strong>: shopping in Italy; daily routine;<br />

habits in the past; Italian festivities; Italian food; in a hotel.<br />

3-Credit Italian Language Intermediate 1<br />

This course is directed towards the acquisition of more complex<br />

structures of Italian language in or<strong>de</strong>r to express personal<br />

opinions and preferences. By the end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

should be able to enter unprepared into conversation on topics<br />

that are familiar; to relate the plot of a book or film; to write<br />

correct texts on topics of personal interest. Key grammatical<br />

topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: review of previous level contents; past perfect;<br />

prepositions; combined, in<strong>de</strong>finite and interrogative pronouns;<br />

present and past conditional; linking words; impersonal forms;<br />

This course introduces stu<strong>de</strong>nts to contemporary Italian society<br />

by exploiting different sources including literature, the media<br />

and press. By the end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able to<br />

show a high <strong>de</strong>gree of un<strong>de</strong>rstanding of complex written and<br />

spoken texts and respond appropriately to them, both orally<br />

and in writing. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: review and<br />

expansion of contents of previous levels; forms and use of the<br />

subjunctive mood; imperative with pronouns; introduction to<br />

passato remoto; infinitive and gerund; <strong>de</strong>grees of comparison;<br />

passive voice; relative pronouns; reported speech (first<br />

level). Key thematic areas inclu<strong>de</strong>: famous Italians; issues of<br />

contemporary history, culture and society; local arts and crafts;<br />

This course is <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who already have a solid<br />

grammatical/lexical basis. By the end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

should be able to un<strong>de</strong>rstand most TV news and information<br />

on current affairs; read contemporary literary prose; write<br />

texts about a wi<strong>de</strong> range of subjects; achieve the <strong>de</strong>gree of<br />

confi<strong>de</strong>nce with the language that makes communication fluid<br />

and clear. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: consolidation of<br />

previous levels; impersonal forms; clauses and constructions<br />

using the subjunctive; passato remoto; passive forms in<br />

contrast; relative clauses in contrast. Key thematic areas<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong>: changes in the Italian language and dialects; typical<br />

Italian products; immigration in Italy; environmental issues.<br />

This course is <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have a high <strong>de</strong>gree<br />

of fluency in Italian both in speaking and in writing. By the end<br />

of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able to formulate i<strong>de</strong>as and<br />

opinions with precision and recognize a wi<strong>de</strong> range of idiomatic<br />

expressions and colloquialisms, as well as apply register<br />

shifts. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: review of previous<br />

levels; past perfect subjunctive; past conditional; in<strong>de</strong>finite<br />

adjectives pronouns; verbs and prepositions; conditional<br />

clauses; trapassato remoto; gerund, infinitive, participle; tense<br />

agreement; reported speech (second level). Key thematic areas<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong>: Italian regionalism; the Risorgimento; politics and the<br />

This is a 4-Credit Elementary 1 course <strong>de</strong>signed for absolute<br />

beginner stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have never studied Italian before. By the<br />

end of the course stu<strong>de</strong>nts should be able to <strong>de</strong>al with the most<br />

common everyday situations by expressing themselves in the<br />

present and past tenses. Compared to a 3-Credit Elementary<br />

1 course, this course <strong>de</strong>votes more time to practicing the four<br />

main language abilities both in class and outsi<strong>de</strong> besi<strong>de</strong>s<br />

introducing some additional grammar topics and exploring<br />

Italian culture. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: <strong>de</strong>finite and<br />

in<strong>de</strong>finite articles; noun-adjective agreement; present tense of<br />

regular and main irregular verbs; prepositions; direct pronouns;<br />

present perfect; possessive adjectives. Key thematic areas<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong>: shopping for food; daily life and spare time; vacations;<br />

at the restaurant; family; in town. Selected readings. During the<br />

intersession at least 4 hours are <strong>de</strong>dicated to mandatory extra<br />

4-Credit Italian Language Elementary 2<br />

This course is <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who have completed one<br />

semester (or equivalent) of Italian and who already have a<br />

basic vocabulary of Italian and basic knowledge of elementary<br />

structures of the language. By the end of the semester stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

should be able to complete simple and routine tasks requiring<br />

an exchange of information on familiar matters, to <strong>de</strong>scribe<br />

their background and issues related to everyday life. Compared<br />

to a 3-Credit Elementary 2 course, this course <strong>de</strong>votes more<br />

time to practicing the four main language abilities both in<br />

class and outsi<strong>de</strong> besi<strong>de</strong>s introducing some additional topics<br />

and exploring Italian culture. Key grammatical topics inclu<strong>de</strong>:<br />

review of Elementary 1 level contents; simple and compound<br />
