Expository Preaching I<br />

The Department<br />

An introduction to basic expository<br />

preaching theory and skills, emphasizing<br />

the preparation and delivery of a textually<br />

derived proposition with accuracy,<br />

interest, clarity, and relevance. Students<br />

preach twice and receive evaluation<br />

from fellow students and the professor.<br />

Prerequisite: BE101 Bible Study Methods<br />

and Hermeneutics. Enrollment limited<br />

to 12 students. 3 hours.<br />

PM104 Expository Preaching II<br />

The Department<br />

Instruction in narrative preaching, with<br />

attention to theological development,<br />

sermon structures, oral clarity, visioncasting<br />

through preaching, the public<br />

reading of Scriptures, and long-term<br />

sermon development. Students preach<br />

twice and receive evaluation from fellow<br />

students and the professor. Prerequisite:<br />

NT104 Introduction to New Testament<br />

Exegesis and PM103 Expository Preaching<br />

I. Enrollment limited to 12 students.<br />

A study of biblical preaching, with emphasis<br />

on advanced homiletic theory<br />

and practice. Prerequisite: PM103 Expository<br />

Preaching I. 3 hours.<br />

Expository Teaching for Women<br />

The Department<br />

The principles and practice of expository<br />

teaching, with emphasis on structure<br />

and presentation, accuracy, clarity, and<br />

relevancy. This course will prepare<br />

women to present Scripture accurately<br />

in various contexts. Prerequisite: BE101<br />

Bible Study Methods and Hermeneutics.<br />

Preaching Old Testament<br />

Narrative<br />

Warren and Chisholm<br />

Preparing for and preaching narratives<br />

of the Old Testament, with emphasis on<br />

backgrounds, forms, literary technique,<br />

theology, and homiletics. Prerequisites:<br />

PM103 Expository Preaching I and OT103<br />

Introduction to Hebrew Exegesis. Enrollment<br />

limited to 14 students. 3 hours.<br />

Preaching the Gospels<br />

Warren and Lowery<br />

Preparing for and preaching the Gospels,<br />

emphasizing backgrounds, forms, Synoptic<br />

parallels, literary technique, theology,<br />

and homiletics. Prerequisite: PM103 Expository<br />

Preaching I and NT104 Introduction<br />

to New Testament Exegesis. Enrollment<br />

limited to 14 students. 3 hours.<br />

Homiletics<br />

PM201<br />

Expository Preaching III<br />

The Department<br />

Instruction in preaching epistolary,<br />

topical, and evangelistic expository<br />

sermons. Students preach three times<br />

and write a research paper. Required<br />

of all students in the Pastoral Ministries<br />

track. Prerequisite: PM104 Expository<br />

Preaching II. Enrollment limited to 15<br />

students. 3 hours.<br />

PM202 Expository Preaching IV<br />

The Department<br />

Instruction in preaching the Psalms<br />

and Old Testament prophetic passages.<br />

Students preach three times, including<br />

a “senior sermon,” and develop a<br />

preaching calendar. Required of all<br />

students in the Pastoral Ministries track.<br />

Prerequisite: PM201 Expository Preaching<br />

III and completion of, or concurrent<br />

enrollment in, OT104 Principles of<br />

Hebrew Exegesis. Enrollment limited<br />

Richard<br />

A study of the content, principles, and<br />

practice of expository evangelistic sermons,<br />

including preparing and preaching<br />

evangelistic messages. Prerequisites:<br />

PM102 Evangelism and PM103 Expository<br />

Preaching I. 2 hours.<br />

Black Preaching<br />

The Department<br />

A study of the history, style, and theology<br />

of the black homiletic tradition, with<br />

emphasis on developing an expository<br />

style within this context. Prerequisite:<br />

PM103 Expository Preaching I. 3 hours.<br />
