COURSE<br />
DESCRIPTIONS<br />
<strong>Dallas</strong> <strong>Seminary</strong> is a member of the Institute of <strong>Theological</strong><br />
Studies (ITS), a cooperative program of several evangelical<br />
seminaries. Courses based on lectures by biblical scholars are<br />
offered on audiocassette. Course credit in independent study<br />
may be earned by students who enroll in the courses, listen to<br />
the tapes, and complete the requirements stipulated in the<br />
syllabi. ITS courses can be used toward unrestricted electives<br />
in a degree program; however, <strong>Dallas</strong> <strong>Seminary</strong> does not offer<br />
any degree programs through correspondence. Substitution of<br />
selected ITS courses for required courses in a degree program is<br />
only allowed in exceptional circumstances with Credits<br />
Committee approval.<br />

Old Testament<br />
IOT505 The Book of Psalms<br />
Bruce K. Waltke<br />
An introduction to the Book of Psalms, with emphasis<br />
on the principles of exegesis of the hymnic literature and<br />
the application of these principles in selected portions.<br />
Attention is given to the various forms of psalms, their<br />
setting within the historical experience of Israel, and<br />
their application today within the church. A knowledge<br />
of Hebrew is helpful but not required. 2 hours.<br />

IOT506 Understanding the Old Testament<br />
Bruce K. Waltke<br />
A survey of the history of salvation in the Old Testament as it<br />
relates to Old Testament theology, that is, the establishment of<br />
God’s kingdom on earth. A knowledge of Hebrew is helpful<br />
but not required. 3 hours.<br />
IOT507 The Book of Proverbs<br />
Bruce K. Waltke<br />
An exegetical study of the Book of Proverbs in both its<br />
cultural and historical setting and its literary setting, with<br />
attention to critical and hermeneutical problems. To get<br />
full benefit from the course, a knowledge of Hebrew is<br />
required. 3 hours.<br />
IOT509 The Christian and Old Testament Theology<br />
Walter C. Kaiser<br />
A biblical and theological study of the foundational theology<br />
applied by the Old Testament for the New Testament and<br />
the Christian church. Included are the topics of saving faith,<br />
the people of God, the role of the Law of God, the worship<br />
of God, the doctrine of the Atonement, the relationship between<br />
the Law and wisdom theology, the kingdom of God,<br />
the Messiah, the inclusion of the Gentiles, the theology of<br />
the Holy Spirit, and the preparation of the New Covenant.<br />
