Radioactive Waste Management Facility<br />

Facility specifically designed to handle, treat, condition, temporarily store or<br />

permanently dispose of radioactive waste.<br />

Radioactivity<br />

The phenomenon whereby atoms undergo spontaneous random disintegration, usually<br />

accompanied by the emission of radiation.<br />

Radiography (Medical)<br />

Technique for obtaining, recording and optionally processing, directly or after transfer,<br />

information contained in an X-ray pattern at an image receptor area.<br />

Radiography Source<br />

A source sealed in one or more capsules, or an X-ray tube, or an electron accelerator<br />

or a neutron source used for industrial radiography.<br />

Radiography Technician/Radiography Technologist/Radiographer<br />

A worker, who performs radiography operations employing radiography sources and<br />

possesses a valid qualification, duly recognised by the competent authority for the<br />

specific purpose.<br />

Radiological Safety Officer (or Radiation Safety Officer)<br />

Any person who is so designated by the employer and who, in the opinion of the<br />

competent authority, is qualified to discharge the functions outlined in the <strong>Atomic</strong><br />

<strong>Energy</strong>(Radiation Protection )Rules, 2004.<br />

Radiotherapy/Radiation Therapy<br />

Medical treatment by ionising radiation.<br />

Registration<br />

A type of regulatory consent issued by the regulatory body for all sources, practices<br />

and uses involving radioactive materials and radiation generating equipment.<br />

Safety Assessment<br />

Review of the aspects of design and operation of a source, which are relevant to the<br />

protection of persons or the safety of the source, including the analysis of the provisions<br />

for safety and protection established in the design and operation of the source and the<br />

analysis of risks associated with normal conditions and accident situations.<br />
