T^HE baby is growing and doing fine, thank you. He has hair on his chest and is making his voice heard around the Texas Tech campus. We call him Texas Epsilon, you know. He came into being just last May, and, my, how he's expanded. His initiates now number 167. The active chapter comprises 58 initiates and 29 Phikeias. The members include the student body president, two members of the Student Council, three nominees to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, the editor and the business manager of the college annual, five holders of academic scholarships, and ten lettermen in the Double-T Association. Texas Epsilon's alumni group now includes two men whose name may be added to the Fraternity's roster of men in Who's Who. Dr. Clifford B. Jones, president emeritus of Tech and a member of Silver Key, was initiated into 4i A 6 at the installation. Now Dr. D. M. Wiggins, Lubbock banker and former Tech president, has been initiated as a Brother in the Bond by virtue of his membership in Silver Key. The baby's float in the Homecoming Parade at Tech won first place in the comic division. It was a prophetic blue whale that prophesied a "whale of a victory for Tech" over the University of Arizona. Texas Epsilon has had two initiations this year, possibly a third by the time this report is in print. October 4, in the home of Parker Prouty, Oklahoma '23, a group of 26 Phikeias and four former members of Silver Key subscribed to the Bond and became brothers. The Phikeia group included: T. Glen Cary, Brownfield; G. Decker McKim, Don W. Bacon, Robert D. Beckwith, Jerry C. Brown, William R. Bunton, Samuel T. Camp Jr., Sammy M. Hodge, C. Melvin Deardorff, William A. Kilpatrick, Roy A. Middleton, Don N. Mills and Ben Lee Wilson, all of Lubbock; Jim M. Alexander, Abilene; T. Farrell Bryant, San Angelo; Gerald S. Ford, Dallas; Royal M. Hagerty, Pass Christian, Miss.; Gary D. Hancock, Kermit; Ted Harrison, Roswell, N.M.; John W. Jones, Brady; David L. Larson, Marfa; David L. Loughridge, Fort Worth; E. B. Moreman Jr., Amarillo; Danny E. Owen, Plainview; C. Jack Pruitt, Odessa, and W. Jack Nelson, Denver City. The Silver Key group comprised Dr. Wiggins; Thomas J. Friday, Midland, and James B. Hall and Billy M. Scales, both of Lubbock. At Homecoming, the first weekend in November, an initiation in three sessions took place, the rites being conducted at the First Presbyterian Church. One Phikeia of the active chapter, John V. Thompson, iSrownfield, and 24 Silver Key alumni became brothers. In the Silver Key alumni group were Tanner Laine, John B. Malone, Fred Underwood, Wesley B. Hamilton, Joe K. Jones, John F. Scaling, Fort Worth. Ready for initiation at this writing are Phikeias Billy Jack Harris of Plainview, Marland S. Ribble of Fort Worth and Clifford L. Sartin of Olney. McEntire, Joe Dean Smith, Bill Williams, James L. Box, Sherrill D. Manning, Glenn E. Rainer, Don L. Sparks, and J. Jerry Van Pelt, all of Lubbock; Bowden W. Cook, Dothan, Ala.; Hugh R. Fewin, Burkburnett; Jerry Bob Johnson, Hale Center; Bobby Ray McGehee, Lampasas; Ralph G. Martin and Dwayne F. West, Fort Worth; Minor W. Nelson, Winters; James D. Odom, Alvarado; N. Gale Orr, Littlefield; Jim Polk, Abilene; Harold Spraggins, West Point, Ga.; George Thacker, Dayton, Ohio, and M. Wayne Teague, Sundown. Texas Epsilon can be justifiably proud of its campus leaders. J. C. Chambers, president of Silver Key before the installation last May, is president of the Student Association and is chief of the executive council of the Board of Student Organizations. He also is on the executive council charged with the operation of the Student Union Building. Serving with him on the Student Council are Brother Moody Alexander, immediate past president of Texas Epsilon, and Phikeia Glen Rainer, both of whom have been nominated for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Alexander, who, along with Phikeia Odom, serves as trainer for the Red Raider football team, earned a gridiron numeral in his freshman year. He is a student representative to the Athletic Council and is vice commander of the Arnold Air Society. Last Spring he was named Tech's Ugly Man in a contest staged by A 4> fl, service fraternity of former Boy Scouts, to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The contest netted $600, which was presented to the ACS in memory of the late Mrs. Roy Hagerty, beloved stepmother of Royal Hagerty, member of A * Ji and then a Phikeia. Phikeia Rainer is president of H S *, scholastic honorary, and ASP, forensics honorary. He is chairman of the executive council of the Board of Student Organizations. He is a member of A SII and is a former C. N. Hilton scholar. Last summer Lubbock sent him as city ambassador to Holland, where he lived with a Dutch family and studied life in that country.
