My Great Oak Tree
A POEM

In a far foreign land there is a great oak tree
And I never can tell what it meaneth to me.
Thither I went in the day long ago
And sat in its shade when the sun was low;
A sadness deep had then carried me down
Where tlie life-cheer ebbs and the soul-fires drown;
Then the great strong arms and whispering leaves
Bestowed me the faiths of their age-long eves
Till the day-bred fears were winnowed apart
And the peace of the place fell to my heart.
HOWARD M. FITCH, Kentucky '30
Formerly general manager of the Herman Nelson division,
Moline, III., Brother Fitch has been elected Vice-President
of American Air Filter Company, Inc., Louisville,
Ky. Joining the company as a sales engineer in 1936, he
served as production manager, manager of the legal and
patent department and assistant to the executive vicefrresident
before becoming manager of the Moline division
in 1953.
JACK RIGDON, Georgia '36, is the new President of
the Tift County (Georgia) Chamber of Commerce.
And thrice since then far over the sea
Have I journeyed alone to my old oak tree
And silently sat in its brotherly shade
And felt no longer alone and afraid;
I was filled with the strength of its brawny-ribbed
bole
And the leaves slow-whispered their peace in my
soul.
If never again I travel the sea
Nor feel once more the still message to me.
•Glad will I call where my haven may be
Farewell and farewell to my great oak tree.
JOHN J. MCDONALD, Ohio '39, is regional sales manager
of the Southeastern Division of the Club Aluminum
Products Company at Sarasota, Fla. Brother
McDonald has been with the company since 1948.
Conclusion of a 12-year public career was marked
by the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles County
Division of the League of California Cities at its
meeting April i. Honored was Mayor ROBERT T.
RADFORD, Chicago '10, of Monrovia, who is retiring
as a member of the City Council because of ill
health.
JIM SLACK, South Dakota '47, has been named acting
director of radio station KUSD at the University of
South Dakota.
"Sixty Years of Living Architecture," FRANK LLO'Y'D
WRIGHT'S Wisconsin '89 exhibition, is in Los Angeles,
Calif., during April for a month-long showing before
the exhibit goes on tour in the Orient. The huge
exhibit is being displayed on a pavilion designed
by Brother Wright in Bamsdall Park. It is to be
the only showing in the western area before the exhibit
moves overseas.
Army SGT. PHILIP F. BROWN, Washington State '53,
was recently awarded the Bronze Star Medal at
Camp Yokohama, Japan. Brother Brown was cited
for his meritorious service as message center chief
with the 45th Infantry Division in Korea from
May 1 to July 27, 1953.
New president of the Ventura, Calif., County
Bar Association is BLAINE T. ROMNEY, Utah '31,
since 1946 city attorney of Santa Paula. He has practiced
law in Ventura County since 1939, except for
a tour of duty with the Air Force during World War
II.
One of the five prominent citizens comprising
the panel of judges for the annual Lane Bryant
awards, given for outstanding service performed
in 1953, is HOWARD A. RUSK, M.D., Missouri '23,
associate editor. The New York Times.
The Southern California Mortgage Bankers Association
at its recent annual meeting elected URBAN
K. WILDE, Butler '31, as its 1954 president. Brother
Wilde is manager of the real estate loan departmeni
of Coldwell, Banker and Company in Los Angeles.
