Seven Phis Make Willamette Varsity

T^HE men of Oregon Gamma are once again
dominating the powerful Willamette University
basketball squad. Out of fifteen squad members,
who make up the team, rated as a title contender
in the Conference, seven are Phis and all are making
a great showing. These seven are: Bill Colvard,
Lefty Shields, Jerry McCallister, and Wes Malcolm,
actives; and Pete Reed, Ron Fitzgerald, and Jack
Bishop, Phikeias.
Bill Colvard is a semi-regular who last season
saw a lot of action on Coach John Lewis' runnerup
team. Bill is 22 years old, stands 6' ii/4", and
a Senior. He is a hard-driving forward and uses
a jump shot as his main offensive weapon. Bill
served as Chaplain of Oregon Gamma for one
semester and was the outstanding A.F.-R.O.T.C.
Air Cadet here at Willamette.
Lefty Shields is another regular who last year
made the conference and all-star team at a guard
post. He is 22, 5' 9", and a Junior. His best shot
is also of the jump variety. Lefty was Rush Chairman
of Oregon Gamma and has held class offices
on campus in which he did a fine job.
Jerry McCallister, a regular who saw plenty of
action last year, is 19 years of age. He is a good
playmaking guard. Jerry is a member of the chapter
Executive Board.
Wes Malcolm is a Sophomore, 19 years old, and
6' tall. He is a good defensive player and a better
than average shot as a guard.
Heading the Phikeias is Pete Reed, a 19-year-oId
Sophomore, 6' 4" in height, who was regular center
on the varsity as a Freshman last season. Pete is
being used this year in both forward and center
spots from which positions he makes good use of
his smooth, effective hook-shot. Pete was third high
scorer last season with 248 points.
Ron Fitzgerald is. 19, stands 6' 3", and is a
Sophomore. He played freshman ball last year and
is the possessor of a fine set shot from the forward
position.
Jack Bishop is 18 years of age, 6' 6" in height,
and a Freshman. He played regular center for
Salem high last season and is being groomed for
forward duties this season. He has aggressiveness
at the boards and is a good shot from outside.

I might also add the name "Jocko," our great Dane
who has been with us now for a full term. Ted Romanoff,
Tex Whiteman, Ron Fundingsland and Larry Paulus have
done an outstanding job this year for the Oregon State
basketball team. Oregon Beta is well represented on the
basebaU diamond this Spring with Bob Buob, Jim
Ruggles, Jack Stephenson, John Stolsig, Jerry Exley and
Doug Wray comprising the backbone of the Beaver nine.
As usual the Phis are leading the intramural race on campus,
with the A, B, C, basketbaU teams doing a fine
