THE SCROLL of Phi Delta Theta for March, 1954
PHIS ON KNOX VARSITY
L TO R: Hurdle, Hill, Culbertson, Woeltje.
Phi team is 6'4" Pete Reed, who is leading
the Willamette cagers toward a Northwest
Conference title. He is his team's leading
scorer and has a 13-point average per game.
A pair of splendid Seniors—Don DeJong,
Denison's 6'5" two-time Little AU-Phi selection,
and Ed Anderson, Montana co-captain—complete
the first team. Dejong, Denison
captain, has a 15-point average per
game this year and he has averaged 15 rebounds
per game. He established a new lifetime
Denison scoring record of 859 points.
Anderson repeated his Little AU-Phi honors;
was seventh high among Skyline Conference
scorers and received honorable mention
on the National Coaches Association
7 th District NCAA team. One of Anderson's
best games was when he scored 15 points
against Indiana's national champions.
The second team is led by Bob Kinney,
Case, a G'g" center who compiled a 20-point
average per game in the first fifteen contests.
At forwards are Rick Benson, a 6'7" Florida
State Junior who has a 13-point scoring
average, and Don Augustin, North Dakota
Sophomore, who carries a 14-point average.
Benson's scoring punch sparked Florida
State to a state championship over such
schools as Miami, Stetson, Rollins, and
Tampa; he was a top defensive ace and controlled
both backboards in almost every contest.
Augustin, according to his coach, is an
excellent scorer and one of the best board
men in the North Central Conference; he is
a sure choice for all conference honors.
At guards are John Habeeb, a Gettysburg
Senior, with a 19-point average per game,
and Gene Waterfall, Lake Forest Sophomore,
with a 12.5 average.
The third team is led by Don Robinson,
Whitman, converted to a guard for selection
purposes and James Rath, South
Dakota guard. The remaining trio are Richard
Weissenbom, Lafayette; Dick Culbertson,
Knox captain, and Neil Oblom, Washington
& Jefferson.
It is regrettable that injured Dick Fain,
Whitman captain; Jerry McCallister of Willamelte's
title-bound Northwest Conference
kingpins; Jim Johnson, Centre, with a 14-
point average; Karl Hurdle, Knox leading
scorer with over 300 points and Bill Lahrman,
Washington (St. Louis) all of whom
turned in splendid performances throughout
the season had to be assigned honorable
mention only.
Honorable Mention
Maurice Lorenz, Purdue; Ev Cocallas, Lake Forest; George
Razook, and Ron Lackie, North Dakota; Stan Frahm and
Don DeKoster, Iowa State; Hank Steinman, U.C.L.A.;
Don Cavanaugh, Washburn; Allen Perry, Robert Morgan
and Gerry Hanks, Washington State; Jim Ladd, Bowling
Green; Mory Locklin, Lawrence; Lake Kelley, Ga. Tech;
John Biever and Ron Lebuhm, Northwestern; Wynne
Casteel, Missouri; Frank Nickle, Montana; Jerry Johnson,
Washington; Ron Fundingsland, Oregon State; Jerry
Raugust, California; Bruce Dursema, Colgate; Phil Wheeler,
