language. Once again, oversight of compliance with these requirements is conducted by ISM<br />

audits and frequent inspections by flag states and the United States Coast Guard.<br />

For those ships on an international voyage, the Safety of Life at Sea Convention<br />

mandates compliance with the ISM Code. This comprehensive Code requires that each vessel<br />

operating company and each vessel participate in a very strictly defined management program,<br />

under both internal and external audit and regulatory oversight that sets forth detailed procedures<br />

for assuring compliance with safety, environmental protection, emergency response and training<br />

mandates.<br />

Equivalent equipment, practices and procedures<br />

CLIA member lines have agreed that the use of equivalent or other acceptable practices<br />

and procedures shall be communicated to CLIA. As appropriate, such practices and procedures<br />

shall be included as a revision to this document. As an example, when improved systems for<br />

treating blackwater and graywater are perfected, shown to meet the requirements for MSDs and<br />

accepted by appropriate authorities for the treatment of graywater, the new systems and<br />

associated technology will be included together with their impact on the current standard of<br />

discharging graywater only while underway.<br />
