Text: Check lifeboat / security / tender vessel engineering systems are oil or grease leak / drip free (40<br />

CFR 110.3)<br />

Background: Small vessels used by the cruise ship in regular or emergency operations are potential<br />

sources of oil.<br />

What to check for: Visually check decks under stowed tenders and boats for signs of oil spills or oil<br />

stains. Include a visual inspection for greased gobs / drops on decks / equipment. Winch equipment<br />

containment should be oil free. Some vessels have “outrigger davits” they are hydraulically operated.<br />

Check hose connector oil sweating / leaks and containment areas. Also steel rope should be checked<br />

for grease gobs.<br />

Text: Check lifeboat / security / tender vessel bilges are clean (40 CFR 110.3)<br />

Background: Small vessels used by the cruise ship in regular or emergency operations are potential<br />

sources of oil.<br />

What to check for: Visually check when available the bilges of vessels operated by the cruise ship.<br />

Should be clean and well maintained.<br />

Text: Check oil and grease from topside equipment (winches motors etc.) (EPA VGP 2.2.1)<br />

Background: Equipment such as winches and motors used to lower and raise lifeboats and tenders are a<br />

potential source or oil or grease into water, either directly running off or during cleaning activities.<br />

What to check for: Visually check for oil spills on decks near machinery. If drip pans are available,<br />

check that there are procedures for draining and cleaning the pans.<br />
