Text: WW sample events are conducted IAW Quality Assurance Plan (minimum safety) requirements.
This includes proper personal protection gear. (NWCCA QAPP).
Background: Wastewater samples taken for the USCG or ADEC need to follow an approved Quality
Assurance Plan. Part of the QAPP will contain safety requirements for the samplers (and/or crew if they
are sampling). The reason for this is that they are working with potential biological hazards, as well as
working with chemicals such as acids used for preservation of samples.
While most samplers work in a professional manner, Ocean Rangers have identified samplers wearing
no eye protection, no gloves, and open toed shoes. Besides being a violation of the QAPP these
situations are dangerous to the sampler.
Please note: There can be high pressure from the sample port, which could spray water if a bottle is
placed too close, especially if sampler is not familiar with sample port. Be aware of this when observing
samples.
What to check for: Samplers are wearing gloves and some type of eye protection. Samplers should also
have some type of protective clothing on. Check that sampler is properly handling preservatives such as
acid, and disposing of material properly. Sample waste should not be placed in bilges.
Citation:
From the 2010 NWCCA QAPP:
Samplers will wear disposable gloves, protective clothing and safety eyewear and will observe
precautions while collecting samples, remaining aware of the potential biohazard present.
