Emergency Sample Kit Instructions
Ocean Ranger 2012
Introduction/ Why Sample?
The emergency sample kits are provided so that a sample can be taken in case of an accident or
incident. These samples should only be taken if there are no safety issues and with the permission of the
ship. These are relatively simple test kits, and will only be measuring a few parameters. Sampling of
wastewater provides DEC information on whether equipment was functioning properly, and if there was
a spill it might give a representation of what was released.
Kit contents:
One hard plastic cooler with label
One set of safety goggles, one pair of gloves
One Chain of Custody form, one tamper resistant seal
One thermometer
One pH test kit with 100 test strips, One chlorine test kit with 50 test strips
Two 1 liter collapsible plastic bottles
One 120 ml sealed preserved sample bottle
One 125 ml sample bottle for testing
Safety Information: Use supplied safety goggles and gloves while sampling. Treat all samples
as potential biohazards. Do not reuse gloves. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t sample if
you feel uncomfortable. Do not operate the sample port or any equipment. Let an employee of
the ship collect the samples in the bottles.
